Downingtow­n West girls lacrosse team defeats host Boyertown in district opener

The Downingtow­n West girls lacrosse team entered the District 1 Class 3A playoffs under suboptimal conditions, having lost five of its last six games.

Tuesday’s visit to Boyertown was the perfect trip to right the ship for the Whippets as the No. 18 seeds scored an 11-8 road victory at No. 15 Boyertown to advance to the second round of the district tournament.

Lauren Tinson scored three goals and Ashley Plzak and Rylee Slate (one assist) netted two apiece to advance Downingtow­n West to a second round meeting with another Pioneer Athletic Conference foe, No. 2 seed Owen J. Roberts. That game will be 7 p.m. Thursday at OJR.

It was a close game throughout, but D-West seized control late in the first half, turning a 4-2 deficit into a 6-5 halftime lead.

The Whippets stayed on top throughout the second half and had a nervy moment when Boyertown got within 10-8 with 3:42 to play.

But Tinson cleanly won the ensuing draw and the Whippets killed a bit of clock before Ava Brady sealed it to regain a threegoal advantage.

Other scorers for Downingtow­n West (11-7) were Elizabeth Mahmud (1 goal, 1 assist), Lainey Straub (1 goal) and Maddie Greco (1 goal, 2 assists). Boyertown was led statistica­lly by Delaney Fox (2 goals, 2 assists) and Hannah Adamski (2 goals, 1 assist, 7 draw controls). Tuesday. The Eagles got hat tricks from Caitlyn Hubiak and Annabelle Wiedel and was leading 11-1 at halftime. Shanahan also got fine performanc­es from Paris Masaracchi­a (2 goals, 4 caused turnovers, 5 draw controls) and Sam D’Addezio (8 draw controls). The Eagles advance to play No. 8 seed Villa Maria Academy in the second round of the District 1 2A tournament Thursday.

Boys lacrosse

KENNETT 18, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 5 » Kennett’s Bo Freebery and Jake Freebery combined for 9 goals and 6 assists as the No. 16 seed Blue Demons defeated 17th seed Council Rock North in the PIAA District 1 3A boys’ lacrosse tournament. Kennett also got contributi­ons from Zach Hulme (3 goals), Colin Jung (2 goals, assist), Collin Kelly (won 17 of 27 faceoffs, 1 goal, 1 assist) and Eric Hrabal (10 saves). Kennett will face No. 1 seed Radnor in the next round Thursday.
