‘I FELL TO THE FLOOR’

Katie Horisk received an unexpected surprise this May.

On May 10, two patrons stopped by Liberty Place Pub for a drink. The husband-and-wife couple ended up leaving Horisk with a $1,000 tip on a $41 tab.

“I fell to the floor,” Horisk said upon seeing the tip.

Horisk said Wednesday that she’d never seen the couple before their visit at Liberty Place Pub, which is located in downtown Kennett Square at The Market at Liberty Place, 148 W. State St.

Horisk, 32, said the couple didn’t give a reason for the extremely generous tip. She resides in New Castle, Delaware, and began working at Liberty Place Pub in 2019. “I’m a new mom,” said Horisk. Her son, Finley, turns 1 on June 7 and she said the money will come in handy.

“I got him a few birthday presents,” Horisk said of how she spent some of the tip money.

“How incredible it was to see that someone left a $1,000 tip for Katie,” said James Miller, coowner and manager of Liberty Place Pub. “I heard of big tippers, but this one takes the cake. A huge shoutout to the anonymous patrons.”

Liberty Place Pub is open seven days a week. The bar features an array of cocktail options and 16 draft beers on tap.

The tip comes as the restaurant industry battles to overcome huge losses sustained by the pandemic.

U.S. Senators were set to vote Thursday on a $48 billion small-business aid bill to help restaurants and select other industries that suffered revenue losses during the pandemic. The main goal of the bill is to backfill the Restaurant Revitalization Fund with $40 billion for the roughly two-thirds of applicants who didn’t receive any grant money under the initial $28.6 billion program.
