Coatesvill­e opens playoffs with win

The Coatesvill­e softball squad won its opening round District 1 Class 6A contest, beating Bensalem 3-1 on Monday. Down 1-0, Ashley Stringer picked up Coatesvill­e’s first hit of the day in the fourth inning, stole second and scored the tying run on Caity Hinton’s double. In the sixth inning, Olivia Springer broke the tie with a solo home run. After another Stringer hit and stolen base, Hinton’s RBI single scored the final run of the day. Starter Megan Gochenauer earned the win, striking out 10, including the 200th of her career.

For the first time in his college career,

Lincoln’s Glenn Butler is headed is headed to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championsh­ips. Butler qualified eighth in the high jump and will compete 3:30 p.m. Friday at Grand Valley State (Mich). He is a two-time indoor All-American in the long jump.

He qualified for the high jump at the 2021 NCAA Division II Indoor Championsh­ips, but didn’t compete to focus on the long jump. In the outdoor long jump, Butler finished with the 44th best distance nationally.

BRANDYWINE DESIGNS 9, RAMCON MASONS 3 » Nick Samulewicz threw five strong innings to earn the win for Brandywine Designs (1-2), striking out six and allowing one earned run.

Jason McCormick and John Iezzi led the Brandywine attack with two hits and two RBI apiece in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ramcon (2-1) was led offensivel­y by Jakob Hoffman’s three hits and two RBI.
