Firefighers from three counties respond to battle blaze

HONEY BROOK TOWNSHIP » Firefighters from three counties battled a massive barn fire in Honey Brook Tuesday morning, and no injuries were reported.

The blaze broke out at 8:24 a.m. in the 1100 block of Chestnut Tree Road. Responding for the barn fire were firefighters from Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties.

Chester County 911 Center began receiving 911 calls reporting a large barn on fire with hay and possibly cows inside.

Additional calls reported the possibility of a person still inside the barn.

First arriving units from Honey Brook Fire Company reported a fully involved fire with exposures to two silos and a house that was about 40 feet away. Firefighters were able to quickly determine that everyone was out of the barn upon their arrival.

Because there were no fire hydrants in the area, fire officials dispatched a tanker task force bringing multiple trucks that can carry thousands of gallons of water to the scene. Firefighters also used a pond across the street from the barn to get more water on the raging inferno.

Ladder trucks from East Brandywine and Twin Valley Fire companies were used to flow water from their aerial devices while crews also deployed multiple handlines.

An excavator was also called to the scene to help pull the debris and hay apart to fully extinguish the flames.

It is unclear if any cows were ever in the barn; however, multiple cows were seen in another area behind the barn.

As of noon Tuesday, some of the fire companies had begun to clean up and leave, but multiple companies were still on scene flowing water on all of the hay that was inside the barn.
