Walker’s career-high lifts West Chester past Mansfield

Joshua Walker posted a career-high 23 points, and 11 rebounds for another double-double as West Chester earned an important 78-68 road victory over Mansfield on Saturday afternoon.

Walker led a quartet of Golden Rams (16-6, 11-6) in double figures in the victory, which saw West Chester lead for much of the contest and never trail by more than three points, as Kyle McGee finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds along with a teamhigh five assists as the second Golden Ram with a double-double. Robert Smith added 14 points of his own, while Eli Barrett added 12 points in the victory.

West Chester shot 48.2 percent(27-of-56) from the field despite connecting on just four three-point attempts and shot 71.4 percent (20-of-28) from the line in the win. West Chester held Mansfield to 39.3 percent (22-of-56) shooting from the field.

Idris Ali led Mansfield (5-15, 4-12) in scoring, finishing with 19 points as the first of four Mountainee­rs in double figures in the victory as Michael Dickson had 12 while Manir Waller and Gabe Perez had 10 each in the setback.

Women’s Basketball NEUMANN 70, IMMACULATA 65 >>

The Immaculata women’s basketball team fell on the road to Neumann University by a score of 70-65. In a back and forth first quarter of play, the Mighty Macs came out with an early 18-17 lead. The Macs took advantage of hard cuts and being able to get out in transition and play with some pace. At the half, the Mighty Macs trailed 36-31. Reese Mullins led the way in the first half with 12 points while Abigail Lentowski had 11 of her own. Trailing by as much as 13 out of the break, the Mighty Macs used a full court press to try and claw their way back into the game. At the end of the 3rd, the Knights led 51-45. In the fourth quarter, Immaculata started to find their stroke from outside with back to back threes from Morgan Falcone and Erin Kelly. Despite their best efforts, the Macs could not complete the comeback in the Atlantic East Conference match up.

Overall, Immaculata was led in scoring by Mullins with a game-high 21 points, and Lentowski who added 19. Morgan Falcone also had 11 points for the Mighty Macs.

WEST CHESTER 74, MANSFIELD 71 >>

West Chester (157, 12-4) got off to a slow start on Saturday afternoon at Mansfield (2-18, 1-15) but still trailed for less than 10 minutes of regulation as the Golden Rams erased an early eight-point deficit for a 74-71 road victory. West Chester found itself behind by as many as eight early in the first quarter before storming back and eventually holding a 15-point lead midway through the third period. Michelle Kozicki turned in a career day, finishing with 28 points on 10of-16 shooting to go along with a career-high 15 rebounds as West Chester came all the way back and held off a late Mansfield attempt to earn its eighth victory in a row. Coatesvill­e graduate Danae Ellzy led the way for Mansfield in the loss, turning in a career performanc­e of her own, finishing with 23 points, including a 5-for-9 effort from deep, while Jasmine Hilton registered a double-double of her own with 19 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday afternoon.

Riley Angstadt and Elle Johnson had nine points each. Deja Morris paced the Red Raiders with 12 points. Tyler Conroy (107 pounds), Leo Pezone (114), Tommy Link (121), Nik O’Neill (127), Jack Consiglio (133), Spencer Barnhart (139), SP O’Donnell (145), Nate Rickards (152), Reed Fullmer (160), Matt Connolly (172), Nick Wehmeyer (189), Stosh Zalota (215) and Phil Tabasso (285) won titles for the Friars

Valen Piff (114) and Josh Hillestad (145) finished runner-up for Downingtow­n East. Placing third for the Cougars were Frankie Hydutsky (127), Paxson Warnock (139), Brandon Pacinelli (152), Ryan Loraw (160) and Felix Mason (215).

Unionville had 10 medalists, with Topher Tryon (160) and Ryan O’Leary (172) finishing second. Tommy Robinson (107), Mason Coursey (121), Elvis Pizii (133), Chase Mousaw (145) and Jacob Julier (189) placed third. Leo Stoltzfus (127), Brady Kelly (215) and Dan McDonald (285) earned fourth for the Longhorns.
