Durkin nabs All-America honors at national swimming

Keeley Durkin picked up an All-America certificat­e in the 1000-yard freestyle Wednesday evening as West Chester University’s women’s swimming team continued its progress at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championsh­ips inside the Indiana Natatorium.

Durkin placed fifth overall registerin­g 14 points for the Golden Rams while establishi­ng a new personal best time of 10 minutes, 2.06 seconds. That was an eight-second drop off her time at the PSAC Championsh­ips a few weeks earlier.

Sophia Gerhart was 20th in the 1000 free with a personal best time of 10:14.58.

McKenzie Hemingway finished 12th in the 200 individual medley, setting a new personal best with a time of 2:02.80. She had lowered her personal best in the morning prelims, placing 13th. However, she knocked more time off that effort in the evening while moving up one spot in the standings.

The 200 medley relay placed seventh with a time of 1:42.07. Lila DiCarlo, Hemingway, Ann Carozza and Samantha Trumble made up that foursome that also secured an All-America plaudit for the Golden Rams and another 24 points.

Men’s Swimming

DIVISION II NATIONALS >> Paul Demesy placed 10th in the 1000-yard freestyle to earn West Chester University’s first points. Demesy picked up seven points for the Golden Rams, touching the wall in 9 minutes, 9.91 seconds. Teammate Collin Pettit placed 19th in the 1000 as well. Kolos Nagy finished 41st in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.34.

Baseball IMMACULATA 5, BUENA VISTA 1>>

The Immaculata baseball team defeated Buena Vista University today by a final score of 5-1. On the mound for the Mighty

Macs, junior Derek Andrada got the start, and he did not disappoint. Andrada threw 6 1/3 innings allowing 6 hits while picking up 5 strikeouts and did not allow any runs. At the plate, Ryan Struble led the way going 2-3 with a 2 RBI double in the 4th to get the Macs on the board first. He also scored 2 runs.

Joey Steff went 1-2 with an RBI single in the 4th to plate Struble. Joey Wright and Justin Klemick also added an RBI each on sacrifice flies. Josh Crowding was a mainstay on the bases this evening drawing four walks in five plate appearance­s.
