Immaculata goes extra innings for win

The Immaculata University baseball team earned a 4-1 victory in 10 innings against St. John Fisher Friday in Winter Haven. Fla.

The game was scoreless heading into the eighth inning when Josh Crowding scored on a wild pitch to give the Mighty Macs a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals then tied it up with a solo home run.

In the 10th inning, Immaculata’s Ryan Struble led off with a double, then Steven Theisen singled and Joey Sacco walked to load the bases. Louis Sharp hit a sacrifice fly and freshman Nick Turnage hit a two-run single to give the Mighty Macs a 4-1 lead.

Starting pitcher Jason Hughes struck out 10 batters in seven innings. Thomas DeSarno picked up the win with two hitless innings of relief.

On Thursday, the Mighty Macs scored double digit runs for the third consecutiv­e game to take down Husson by a score of 10-5. Crowding led the way at the plate collecting three hits, including a double and a home run. Shawn Haut also had three hits. Matt Passerini and Hunter Weitzel each had a pair of hits while the team swiped four bases and tallied 14 hits on the game. Stephen DiBattista picked up his second win of the season, allowing three hits and two earned, striking out three. Derek Andrada picked up the save, with 1.2 innings of shutout relief work striking out two.

The Atlantic East Conference announced its women’s tennis preseason coaches’ poll results Friday, and Immaculata, led by firstyear head coach Susan Callahan, was voted tied for second with six points and one first place vote. Marymount was voted the favorite to repeat as conference champions with eight points. Immaculata returns All-Atlantic East First Team singles and doubles member senior Pamela Kontaras as well as All-Atlantic East Conference Second Team selection and the 2023 Atlantic East Conference Rookie of the Year sophomore Delaney Brown. Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach on Thursday. After a two-hour weather delay, Immaculata defeated Cairn 5-3 then beat Bridgewate­r State 10-7. In the opener, Immaculata pitcher Emma Mercadante

(1-1) earned the complete game win, allowing six hits, three runs, one earned run, and striking out 11. In the second game, Immaculata used a five-run rally in the fourth inning to overcome a 6-5 deficit. In the bottom of

the fourth, Immaculata tied the score when Kristen Carter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Courtney Gable. Bryele Anthony singled to left field, scoring Kaitlyn Carter. Emma Pinto scored on a passed ball, and then Naila Valdez hit a two-run single to right field scoring Kristen Carter and Bryele Anthony to put Immaculata ahead 10-6.
