Joseph E. Atkinson
Joseph E. Atkinson, 70, of Coatesville died Friday, March 22, 2024 at Chester County Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Dr. Joseph and Alice Rubincam Atkinson and the husband of Carol Given Atkinson, with whom he shared 32 years of marriage. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Coatesville.
Joe was a 1972 graduate of Coatesville Area Senior High School where he played football and was a member of the swim team. He loved following Coatesville sports long after graduation, in addition to enjoying his Philadelphia sports teams.
In 2016, Joe retired from Lukens Steel Co. after 43 years of service as a Turn Foreman.
Joe was a member of Camp Savage in Potter County, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed taking his children, and later grandchildren, spotting for wildlife.
In addition to his wife Carol and his favorite dog Molly, Joe is survived by his 3 children: Kristen (David) Porter of Coatesville, Joseph R. Atkinson (Erika Jones) of Coatesville, and Dan Weihermuller of Gordonville; six grandchildren: Kaelyn and Joseph E. Atkinson, Allie and Ian Porter, Vylit and Lilly Weihermuller, and Addison McElyea; his sister, Dolores Pike and her husband Dave of New Castle; and brothers Harry Atkinson and his wife Sheree of Raeford, NC and Paul Atkinson and his wife Darla of Coatesville.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brothers James and Thomas Atkinson.
Joe’s funeral will be celebrated Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 11am at Lutheran Church of the Shepherd 107 S. 17th Avenue, Coatesville. Visitation will be held from 10-11am at the Church.
Visitation will also be held Monday, April 1, from 6-8pm at Wentz Funeral Home 342 E. Chestnut St. Coatesville 610-384-0318.
Interment will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery, Coatesville.
