West Chester University baseball earns doublehead­er sweep

The host West Chester University baseball team picked up a doublehead­er sweep over visiting Lock Haven Monday at Serpico Stadium to hold serve in the Pennsylvan­ia State Athletic Conference Eastern Division with a four-game series sweep of the Bald Eagles.

For West Chester (14-5-1, 7-5 PSAC East) it marked the first four-game sweep of a season series with Lock Haven (6-17, 3-9) since 2019.

The Golden Rams’ pitching was the story of the day. Game one starter Julian Costa tossed a complete game, six-hitter, yielding just one unearned run in a 7-1 win. Game two starter Nick Noga (an Avon Grove High School alum) lasted four innings, surrenderi­ng two runs, only one of them earned, on five hits. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter in the 8-4 win.

John DeMucci went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game while Darius Troche hit his second home run of the season. Leadoff hitter Evan Profy stole three bases in the second game. He was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a RBI in the opener.

Anthony Boccio, a Coatesvill­e High School alum, went 2-for-3 with a triple and a pair of RBI in game one. He was 3-for-6 combined in the doublehead­er. Avery Spencer went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles in game one as well. MACS SWEEP SERIES >> Immaculata University concluded its series sweep over Marywood with a 21-3 victory in the final game of the series. Alex Lepage earned his first conference start and did not disappoint, surrenderi­ng four hits in six innings of work while striking out nine. The attack was led by Joey Wright (3-for-5, four RBIs), Ryan Struble (3-for-3, four RBIs), Hunter Weitzel (triple, four RBIs), Joey Sacco (2-for-2 , four walks).

SPLIT >> The Mighty Macs returned to action at home on Monday afternoon for an Atlantic East Conference doublehead­er vs rival Marywood. Immaculata won game one 6-5, before falling 8-0 in six innings in game two. In the first game, Allison Hill and Jess Oldham each hit two-run home runs, and winning pitcher Emma Mercandant­e picked up her 100th career strikeout.

1>> Red Raider head coach Bill Mendenhall earned his 100th career coaching victory, as Daryn McComsey earned the complete game win in the circle allowing only three hits. Taylor Sherry and Jill Wimmer led the offense with two hits each and three runs scored. Danielle Sweigart Hailey Burke, Liv Wilkins, Hailey Persch and Gracelyn Landis each had two RBIs.

DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 6, BISHOP SHANAHAN 0 >> Addy Carter threw a three-hit shutout, striking out 17 batters. Jordan Toth had a triple and two RBIs. WEST CHESTER RUSTIN

10, VILLA MARIA 5 >> The Golden Knights were led by Kelly Fricker (2for-3, home run, five RBIs, two runs scored, walk), freshman Jess Kelly (2-for-3, two runs scored), Joss Garner (three-run home run) and winning freshman pitcher Ashley Falcone. For Villa Maria, leaders were Emilia Falcon (2-for-3, two doubles, two RBIs), Anna Plato (2-for-3) and Alex Kilpatrick (2-for-4).

CONESTOGA 6, PENNSBURY 5 >> Charlie Newhall scored the game-winner in the Pioneers’ overtime victory. Other Conestoga leaders were Liam Donovan (one goal), Clif Hawkins (two goals, two assists), Mark Dolente (one goal), Gunner Flescher (one goal) and goalie Mikey Johnson (seven saves).

Baseball DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 2, BISHOP SHANAHAN 0 >> Drew Turner threw a two-hit shutout, striking out 17 batters. Quinn Henicle had two hits and scored a run for the Whippets. Boys’ Tennis DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 6, BISHOP SHANAHAN 1

>> The Whippets swept the doubles matches in straight sets, as well as second singles (Jack Sheldon) and third singles (Cash Bailey). For the Eagles, Danny Gallagher won first singles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
