Giants starter Cueto placed on injured list

San Francisco Giants righthande­r Johnny Cueto has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained lat muscle.

The team said Thursday that Cueto has a Grade 1 strain beneath his pitching shoulder.

Cueto exited in the sixth inning of his start Wednesday against Cincinnati. He wound up as the winner in a 3-0 victory and improved to 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA this season.

The 35-year-old Cueto left after striking out Nick Castellano­s. The pitcher motioned to the Giants dugout and walked to the clubhouse, accompanie­d by a member of the training staff. CUBS’ TEPERA, ROSS SUSPENDED » Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Tepera was suspended for three games by Major League Baseball, which concluded he intentiona­lly threw at Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff this week.

Tepera appealed the penalty handed down by MLB senior vice president for on-field operations Michael Hill. Tepera, who also was fined, will not have to serve any discipline while the appeal is pending before MLB special adviser John McHale Jr.

Cubs manager David Ross was suspended for one game and fined because of Tepera’s actions. Managers immediatel­y serve discipline, and Ross will sit out the Cubs’ series opener against Atlanta today.

Chicago’s Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch from Woodruff leading off the fourth inning on Tuesday night. Tepera threw a pitch behind Woodruff in the fifth.

Contreras hit a go-ahead, tworun homer off Brent Suter in the eighth, and the Cubs won 3-2. WHITE SOX ACTIVATE STAR SHORTSTOP » The Chicago White Sox reinstated shortstop Tim Anderson from the injured list prior to Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Indians.

Anderson was put on the 10day IL with a strained hamstring after suffering the injury while running out a ground ball in an April 4 game.

Anderson won the American League batting championsh­ip in 2019 with a .335 average and hit .322 last season.

ARENADO’S BIG DEAL » Nolan Arenado’s contract was amended when the All-Star third baseman was traded to the Cardinals by the Colorado Rockies, adding a $15 million salary for 2027 to leave him owed $214 million over seven seasons by St. Louis.

As part of the amended contract, $50 million of that $214 million will be deferred and payable through 2041, according to details obtained by The Associated Press. Colorado would pay St. Louis $51 million, if Arenado decides to keep his entire contract and not opt out early.

Arenado had been set to be paid $199 million over the remaining six seasons of a $260 million, eight-year contract he signed with the Rockies: $35 million annually from 2021-24, $32 million in 2025 and $27 million in 2026.

As part of the amendment reached when Arenado agreed to the Feb. 1 trade, a $15 million salary was added for 2027, when he turns 36.
