Wood remains undefeated, visiting Giants beat Pirates

-

Alex Wood pitched six innings while keeping his perfect record intact and Mike Yastrzemski hit a game-sealing home run as the San Francisco Giants beat the host Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 on Sunday.

Wood (5-0) gave up one run while scattering eight hits. He struck out six and walked one as NL Westleading San Francisco gained a split of the fourgame series.

It has been a resurgent season for Wood, who went a combined 1-4 with a 5.96 ERA in 2019 and 2020 with the Cincinnati Reds and Dodgers while hampered by back problems.

Yastrzemski’s two-run homer in the ninth off David Bednar extended the Giants’ lead to 4-1.

PADRES 5, CARDINALS 3 » Rookie Ivan Castillo had a pinch RBI single for his first big league hit to cap a go-ahead, four-run rally in the fourth inning and San Diego, bolstered by minor leaguers during a COVID-19 outbreak, beat St. Louis for a three-game sweep.

The Padres continue to play well despite having five players on the COVID19-related injured list, including star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. The Padres are 5-1 since Tuesday, when Tatis tested positive before a game at Colorado and right fielder Wil Myers and first baseman Eric Hosmer were pulled from the game. A positive test was returned for Myers while Hosmer was put in the contact tracing protocol.

ASTROS 6, RANGERS 2 » Chas McCormick had a two-run single as part of a four-run eighth, Lance McCullers Jr. threw six scoreless innings and Houston beat Texas for its sixth straight win. BLUE JAYS 10, PHILLIES 8 » Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette hit consecutive first-inning homers, Randal Grichuk had a two-run double in a five-run second and Toronto hung on to defeat Philadelphia.

Semien finished with three hits and three RBIs, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 11th homer, a solo drive in the eighth that gave him home runs in three consecutive games.

Toronto burst to an 8-0 lead and won for the sixth time in eight games. BREWERS 10, BRAVES 9 » Freddy Peralta struck out eight over six scoreless innings, Avisail Garcia homered and Milwaukee blew most of an 8-0 lead before holding on to beat Atlanta. RAYS 7, METS 1 » Manuel Margot, Willy Adames and Brandon Lowe homered off Marcus Stroman, leading Tampa Bay over New York for a three-game sweep.

Two-run homers by Margot in the fourth and by Adames in the fifth built a 4-0 lead.

A’S 7, TWINS 6 » Matt Chapman had three hits and three RBIs and Ramón Laureano scored the goahead run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning as Oakland defeated Minnesota.

Laureano hit a one-out single off reliever Taylor Rogers in the ninth. Matt Olson followed with a grounder back to the mound, but Rogers’ throw skipped off the glove of third baseman Josh Donaldson, who was covering second due to a shift.

Laureano advanced to third on the play and scored when Chapman struck out, as the third strike skipped to the backstop.

Andrelton Simmons tied it for the Twins in the eighth with a two-out, two-run homer off Jake Diekman. ORIOLES 10, YANKEES 6 » Maikel Franco homered and drove in three runs, and Baltimore avoided a three-game sweep by rallying to beat New York.

The Yankees’ Aaron Judge homered for the third straight game and went 6 for 10 with four home runs and five RBIs in the series.

But Jordan Montgomery failed to hold leads of 4-0 in the first inning and 5-2 in the third.

INDIANS 3, MARINERS 2 » Mitch Haniger hit two doubles and Seattle snapped Shane Bieber’s record strikeout streak, beating Cleveland and its ace.

Bieber (4-3) had fanned at least eight in 20 straight games, but the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner fell short with seven. He was pulled after issuing his fourth walk, and finished his shortest outing of the season at 4 2/3 innings trailing 3-0.

The victory was Seattle’s third straight following a season-high five-game losing streak. Cleveland has lost three in a row. NATIONALS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 0 » Erick Fedde threw seven scoreless innings, Yadiel Hernandez hit a go-ahead, pinch-hit homer in the eighth and Washington downed Arizona.

Stefan Crichton gave up three runs on four hits in the eighth.

Arizona’s Luke Weaver retired the first eight Nationals batters he faced and pitched four scoreless innings before being pulled from the game after just 68 pitches. The Diamondbacks said he left with “right shoulder discomfort.”
