Machado goes deep twice in Padres’ win over Phillies

-

Manny Machado drove in five runs with a pair of homers, and the visiting San Diego Padres routed the Philadelphia Phillies 11-1 on Sunday to stop a three-game losing streak.

Padres left-hander Blake Snell tossed four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and four walks in his first start since June 22. Snell had been on the injury list after feeling the effects of food poisoning.

Philadelphia’s Vince Velasquez (3-3) surrendered five runs and nine hits in six innings.

Machado put San Diego ahead in the first by blasting a two-run shot over the center-field wall.

In the third, Velasquez walked Tatis and Jake Cronenworth before Machado sent a three-run drive to left-center for a 5-0 lead.

Demoted Phillies closer Héctor Neris couldn’t get out of the ninth after he struck out the first two batters. Eric Hosmer cleared the bases with a three-run double, and Profar followed with a single to tie his career high with four hits.

After Webster Rivas hit a three-run homer to make it 11-1, backup catcher Andrew Knapp entered and retired pinch-hitter Wil Myers on a grounder.

Anthony DeSclafani threw 8-2/3 solid innings, Austin Slater and Darin Ruf both homered and San Francisco beat Arizona for its third straight victory.

Giants All-Star catcher Buster Posey left the game with a left thumb contusion. The team said X-rays were negative. The 34-yearold took an awkward shot to his glove hand on a foul tip by Daulton Varsho.

DeSclafani (9-3) nearly pitched his third complete game of the season but was lifted in the ninth after Christian Walker’s RBI single with two outs made it 5-2. Tyler Rogers got the final out for his 10th save.

DeSclafani gave up six hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Manny Machado hits a three-run home run in the third inning, his second homer Sunday against the Phillies.

home run off imploding Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman leading off the last inning, José Peraza lined a go-ahead tworun double that was aided by interference from a visiting fan in the Bronx and the New York Mets stunned their crosstown rivals to open a split doubleheader.

Alonso opened the seventh by dropping his barrel on Chapman’s 1-2 slider near the bottom of the zone and lofting it into the visitor’s bullpen to tie it at 5.

Chapman then plunked Michael Conforto, walked Jeff McNeil and was promptly yanked by manager Aaron Boone.

Billy McKinney singled to load the bases, Lucas Luetge struck out pinch-hitter James McCann and Peraza then ripped a ball that would’ve hit midway up the left field wall. Yankees outfielder Tim Locastro might have had a play on it, but a fan in a Mets jersey reached over to catch the ball.

Confused players and fans initially had no idea where the ball went. Locastro pointed at the fan angrily, and umpires conferred on the infield before awarding Peraza two bases.

The Yankees didn’t argue.

Brandon Nimmo followed with a two-run single and Francisco Lindor added an RBI hit.

Chapman (5-3) failed to record an out in his first appearance since giving up a tying grand slam in the ninth during an 11-8 loss Wednesday to the Angels.

Gio Urshela hit a three-run homer and the Yankees saved a little face by beating the Mets to avoid a Subway Series sweep.

Yankees reliever Nestor Cortes Jr. made his first start of the season and was pulled after 3 1/3 innings, having allowed only two hits. Darren O’Day let one of his inherited runners score on Alonso’s 15th homer.

Chad Green (3-4) closed with three perfect innings, striking out six.

Tyler Anderson pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits, and Pittsburgh snapped Milwaukee’s 11game winning streak.

Kevin Newman homered as the Pirates stopped a sixgame slide.

Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta (7-3) had control issues with five walks in six innings. But he allowed just two runs and three hits.

Pinch-hitting pitcher Max Fried lined a bases-loaded single up the middle in the 10th as Atlanta rallied past Miami.

Fried was called on to hit with the Braves out of position players after a four-run rally in the ninth. He singled on a 3-1 pitch off Anthony Bass, driving in Dansby Swanson.

Austin Meadows had three hits, including two RBI doubles, and Tampa Bay ended its 10-game road losing streak.

The Rays had dropped five in a row overall.

Amir Garrett escaped a jam in the ninth inning, and the Reds handed the Cubs their ninth straight loss.

Chicago scored a total of five runs in the weekend series.

The Cubs put runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but Garrett got Willson Contreras to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play for his sixth save.

Yuli Gurriel scored on a two-out error by pitcher Emmanuel Clase in the 10th inning, allowing Houston to beat Cleveland and complete a fourgame sweep.

Astros starter Zack Greinke worked 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, and struck out eight.

Kenta Maeda struck out 10 in six shutout innings and Minnesota beat Kansas City to halt a five-game losing streak.

Maeda (4-3) gave up two hits and a walk.

Nick Pivetta struck out 10 over seven innings to win for the first time in seven starts and Boston scored the lone run on a doubleplay grounder by Rafael Devers in the sixth to beat host Oakland.

Pivetta (7-3) allowed two hits and walked two.

James Kaprielian (4-3) hung tough in a pitcher’s duel. The A’s right-hander struck out a career-best 10 over seven innings with one walk, allowing one run on five hits.
