Brush fire north of L.A. grows to nearly 400 acres, closes 5 Freeway
A full closure of Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles — in the area of Templin Highway north of Castaic — was ordered Saturday evening due to a second-alarm brush fire.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert around 4:51 p.m. alerting the southbound closure at Vista Del Lago Road, which was later moved to Highway 138; and the northbound closure at Templin Highway.
It was not immediately known the lanes would reopen. Motorists can check for information on the Caltrans District 7 Twitter account.
The Route fire had grown to 392 acres by about 6:30 p.m. and had jumped the freeway, officials said. The fire was at 0% containment as of Saturday evening.
Three fire helicopters were scheduled to drop fire retardant throughout out Saturday night, officials said.
An unknown number of structures were threatened, but the Los Angeles County Fire Department ordered resources to protect structures in the area should the fire spread towards them, John Miller, a spokesperson for the Angeles National Forrest, said Saturday evening.
Two firefighters were reported to have minor burn injuries and had been transported for additional treatment, officials said.
Angeles National Forest firefighters responded to the fire just before 4 p.m. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Elevated fire weather conditions were expected through Monday in valleys, mountains and deserts in Los Angeles
County with highs reaching 104 degrees and onshore winds, the National Weather Service said.
This is a developing story, please check later for updates.
