The much-anticipated opening of the beloved Porto’s Bakery & Cafe at the Northridge Fashion Center is set for January, according to the company.

The opening is taking longer than expected. The company announced its opening date last year, but the date was delayed. It came down to “set an open date after the holidays to allow the team to have a smooth opening for our new guests in Northridge,” according to Jennifer Wells, a company representative.

The bakery will occupy the former Sears auto center at 19467 W. Nordhoff St. The company was planning to tear down the former automotive structure and install its own building, but the plans were scrapped after company officials decided to keep the building.

The bakery, known for its sweet and savory pastries, has been operating a tent at the Northridge Fashion Center’s farmers market.

The business was started in the 1970s by Roseanne Raul Porto, who emigrated from Cuba with three children and opened a bakery in Echo Park, selling famous cakes and papa rellena, widely known as potato balls.
