Should President Joe Biden visit Ukraine?
The prime minister of neighboring Canada, Justin Trudeau, has been there. Jill Biden, the first lady, has been there. Heck, Rep. Adam Schiff has been there.
Should President Joe Biden himself pay a visit to war-torn Ukraine?
That's our Question of the Week for our readers.
Other politicians from around the world — obviously neighboring European leaders, but far-flung ones as well — are making what they see as important symbolic trips to Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in a show of solidarity with the Western ally as its people continue to endure a hellish invasion by Russian troops.
Boris Johnson and Emanuel Macron, two leaders of fellow member nations of the United Nations Security Council, have made the trip.
But the United States has the most powerful military and economy in the world. We are the leader of NATO and a key backer of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the comic actor turned global hero whose people are under siege. Does our president need to see the devastation in person?
Or is that too dangerous to do so? Would it be too much of a provocation to Vladimir Putin and his generals? American presidents have certainly visited wartime danger zones in our time. But when presidents Bush and Obama and Trump would be spirited into Afghanistan and Iraq under the cover of night, it was to American bases, secured by American troops. There could be no such security guaranties in today's Ukraine.
In a related question, are we giving the appropriate amount of military support to Ukraine — or too much, or not enough? If its military had more of our weapons, would it have an easier job expelling the Russians?
Or is materiel not enough? Should we send military advisors in to aid in the fight? Or is that just the same as the boots on the ground that we have backed away from, in an understandable effort to avoid sparking World War III? Or has that spark already been lit, regardless of whether our troops are in the fight?
Would the president of the United States being there be the best way to show just how deep our support runs?
