Visiting Mariners just add to Padres' woes

Prized rookie Julio Rodriguez hit a monster two-run homer, Cal Raleigh drove in four runs and Chris Flexen pitched the Seattle Mariners past the host San Diego Padres 8-2 on Monday.

The Mariners won their third straight and sixth in seven games. The Padres gave their home fans little to cheer about as they lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

Flexen (5-8) and three relievers combined to shut down the Padres, who have scored only 10 runs in their last five games. San Diego didn't score Monday until Trent Grisham hit a tworun homer with one out in the ninth.

Rodriguez drove a 2-0 pitch from left-hander Sean Manaea (3-4) onto the balcony of the fourth floor of the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in the left-field corner at Petco Park with one out in the fourth to give the Mariners a 4-0 lead. It was his 15th homer this season and 12th in his last 40 games.

Flexen held San Diego to four hits in 6 2/3 innings, struck out eight and walked three.

Manaea allowed four runs, eight hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Madison Bumgarner posted a win against his former team and Arizona handed visiting San Francisco its fifth straight loss.

Buddy Kennedy drove in a pair of runs for Arizona. The Giants have lost 11 of 14.

Last season, the Giants went 17-2 against Arizona in winning the NL West title. But in the first of their 19 meetings this year, Bumgarner (4-8) and the D-backs prevailed.

Bumgarner, now in his third season with Arizona after helping the Giants win three World Series championsh­ips, allowed three runs in five innings. The 32-yearold lefty struck out four and walked three.

Bumgarner gave up a two-run single to LaMonte Wade Jr. in the first, then settled in. He was pulled after 100 pitches.

Carlos Rodón (7-5) gave up four runs in five innings, striking out seven.

Yordan Alvarez homered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Houston beat Kansas City for its seventh straight win.

The Astros erased a fiverun deficit on the way to their 15th victory in their last 18 games. Kyle Tucker sparked the Astros' threerun eighth with a two-run single, and Alvarez hit a drive to left-center against Scott Barlow (2-2) for his 24th homer.

Taijuan Walker (7-2) struck out nine in six innings as the Mets won their second straight after losing four of five.

Last-place Cincinnati lost for the fifth time in six games. Reds rookie Hunter Greene (3-10) was tagged for six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Walker allowed three runs and four hits.

Victor Caratini hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to lift Milwaukee over Chicago.

Caratini's big hit followed an eventful ninth inning that featured an inside-the-park homer from Chicago's Seiya Suzuki and a two-out, basesloade­d walk by Milwaukee's Christian Yelich.

After striking out in each of his four previous at bats, Caratini hit a 2-1 sinker from Scott Effross (1-4) over the center-field wall.

Trevor Story hit a solo homer, Kutter Crawford pitched 5 1/3 innings of two-hit relief and Boston won its eighth straight Fourth of July game, beating Tampa Bay at Fenway Park.

Franchy Cordero added an RBI single for the Red Sox, who won their second straight game and improved to just 9-16 against AL East rivals.

The Rays had just two hits, both singles, as they had their three-game winning streak halted.

Boston went with a bullpen game because scheduled starter Michael Wacha was scratched Sunday with what manager Alex Cora called dead arm. The Red Sox started Austin Davis for two hitless innings.

Crawford (2-2) struck out eight and walked one and John Schreiber got five outs for h third save.

Jorge Mateo limped to first base when Matt Moore hit him near the left knee with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th as Baltimore came from behind late to beat Texas.

Adley Rutschman, who began the day in an 0-for-18 skid, tied the score against Joe Barlow with a two-out RBI double in the ninth.

Rougned Odor led off the 10th with a bunt single off Moore (3-1) that advanced automatic runner Austin Hays to third, and Moore intentiona­lly walked Ramón Urías to load the bases. Moore (3-1) then hit Mateo with his next pitch, a 93.5 mph fastball.

Mateo bent over in pain for about six seconds. After crossing the plate, Hays accompanie­d a hobbling Mateo to first along with Cedric Mullins, who was on deck, and Odor.

Marcus Semien`s ninthinnin­g homer off Jorge López had put the Rangers ahead 6-5.

Bryan De La Cruz hit a two-run homer off the foul pole in the 10th to keep Miami's domination of the Nationals going with a victory at Washington.

The Marlins won the rare 11:05 a.m. start by beating the Nationals for the 12th time in 13 games this year, including seven in a row. They extended their winning streak to five.

Schoop had four singles and scored two runs to help the Tigers win the opener.

Garrett Hill won his major league debut by pitching six impressive innings and Miguel Cabrera delivered a key two-run single.

Hill allowed just two hits, including a home run by Josh Naylor. He struck out three and walked one.
