An Alhambra police officer shot and wounded an armed 17-year-old boy suspected in a robbery Thursday morning, authorities said.

Police received a call of an armed robbery in progress in the 600 block of South Fremont Avenue at 5:37 a.m., according to the Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the police shooting.

Police didn't say if the robbery was at the 7-Eleven, at 601 S. Fremont Ave., or just outside the store.

When officers arrived, they saw the teen walking on Commonwealth Avenue away from the business, a sheriff's statement said.

At least one officer in a car followed the teen, who ran toward the backyard of an unoccupied home in the 600 block of Meridian Avenue, sheriff's officials said.

As an officer approached the home, the teen showed a gun and the officer fired, according to the statement. Police found a gun at the scene.

The Sheriff's Department originally had said the shooting happened at Meridian Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue.

The 17-year-old was shot in the lower torso and taken to a hospital with a non-lifethreatening wound, authorities said.

Alhambra Unified school officials cancelled classes for Emery Park Elementary School, which is near where the shooting happened.

“We were told (by police) it would be safer for kids, family and staff not to be at the school and would allow them to investigate properly,” said Toby Gilbert, a district spokesperson.

No one was at the school when the shooting occurred, Gilbert said.

Detectives asked that anyone with information about the shooting to call them at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or at lacrimestoppers.org.
