Phantoms hand Warwick first defeat
Daniels, Hargraves boost Phoebus; York rallies from 14 down
Thanks in large part to quarterback Chris Daniels and receiver Barry Hargraves, Phoebus beat Warwick 28-14 Saturday at Darling Stadium to end the Raiders' season-opening winning streak at four.
The Phantoms (2-0, 2-0 Peninsula District), whose schedule has been interrupted by bad weather, went ahead 21-0 through three quarters. Jalen Wright opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run, and Daniels and Hargraves connected on touchdown passes of 49 and 23 yards. Anthony Wallace provided PAT kicks after all three scores.
The Raiders (4-1, 3-1) didn't go down easily.
Tyriq Henderson's 10-yard touchdown pass to Da'twon Cox and Dayvon Meade's 1-yard run into the end zone pulled Warwick to 21-14.
Phoebus, ranked second in Class 3 by VirginiaPreps.com, all but clinched the victory when Daniels ran 26 yards for a touchdown with 2:09 to go in the game.
Kecoughtan 35, Menchville 20: The Warriors (2-2, 2-1) Peninsula District) beat the Monarchs (0-3, 0-3) for the first time in their last three meetings.
By halftime, the Warriors led 21-12 and Kecoughtan quarterback Jonathan Melvin had 154 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.
York 17, Smithfield 14: York overcame a 14-point deficit to remain unbeaten with a Bay Rivers District victory in the Packers' stadium. Zack Eagle kicked a 26-yard field goal to break the tie for the Falcons (4-0, 3-0) with 6.4 seconds remaining. The Packers fell to 1-3, 1-2. Markel Locke's 7-yard touchdown run put Smithfield ahead 7-0, and the Packers extended the margin to 14-0 later in the first quarter.
York narrowed the gap to 14-7 in the second quarter and pulled even on a fourth-down touchdown pass with 1:28 remaining in the third quarter.
Friday
Hampton 14, Bethel 0: Hampton gained a much-needed victory — its first under interim coach Kenny Gilliam — with a shutout of Bethel at Darling Stadium.
It took a while for the Crabbers (1-1, 1-1 Peninsula) to get untracked, but they went ahead on quarterback Max Pietrykowski's 1-yard touchdown run with 7:37 left in the second quarter. The PAT made it 7-0.
As the Crabbers' defense continued to stifle Bethel (1-3, 1-2), Hampton's Darrell Butler all but sealed the victory by running for a 20-yard touchdown with 7:08 left in the fourth quarter.
Jamestown 21, Grafton 13: Jamestown (1-2, 1-2 Bay Rivers District) held off the Clippers (0-3, 0-2) at Bailey Field. Jamestown's quarterback combination of Isaac Tucker and Brailen Mills accounted for three touchdowns in a 2-minute, 9-second span early in the second quarter for a 21-0 lead.
Tucker tossed the first touchdown pass of 6 yards to Yuri Passanita and Mills the next for 17 yards to Oliver Herczeg.
The last was Tucker's 3-yard touchdown run.
But Bryson Fell's 11-yard touchdown pass to Grafton's Max Schramel late in the third quarter ended the shutout, and Fell's 27-yard pass to Aiden Smagh with 10:11 to go in the game cut the Clippers' deficit to eight.
Tucker was 8 for 12 with one interception and two touchdowns, and Mills was 3 for 9 with an interception and a touchdown. Fell was 6 of 12 for 136 yards and one interception. Schramel caught four passes for 64 yards.
West Point 51, Northampton 8: Lawrence Porter ran for three touchdowns and Noah Lawson ran for two.
Isle of Wight Academy 48, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot 0: Ryan Boyce passed for 101 yards and four touchdowns for the Chargers in Powhatan County. IWA's Odin Bristol caught three touchdown throws.
