W&M, HU enter tourneys on streaks

Tribe, Pirates earn road victories; CNU women in Sweet 16

Nathan Knight had 29 points as William and Mary won 70-66 at James Madison to earn the No. 4 seed in the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n tournament.

Matt Milon had 18 points for W&M (14-16,10-8 CAA), which won its fifth consecutiv­e game. Justin Pierce added 14 points, a careerhigh­18 rebounds and eight assists.

Dwight Wilson had16 points and 15 rebounds for JMU (13-18, 6-12), which was seeded eighth and will face No. 9 Towson at 4 p.m. Saturday to start the tourney at North Charleston Coliseum.

Hampton 92, USC Upstate 71: Jermaine Marrow had 30 points as HU closed the regular season with a rout in Spartanbur­g, S.C.

Akim Mitchell scored a careerhigh 26 points and had six rebounds for Hampton (14-15, 9-7 Big South), which will take a four-game winning streak into the conference tournament. Trevond Barnes added 15 points, while Kalin Fisher had 12 points and six rebounds for the Pirates.

Deion Holmes had 23 points for the Spartans (6-25,1-16).

No. 7 Tennessee 71, No. 4 Kentucky 52: Tennessee didn't like the way it got pushed around two weeks ago in Lexington, Ky. The Volunteers pushed back in the rematch and delivered a knockout blow.

Jordan Bone scored a careerhigh 27 points as the Volunteers maintained their home-court dominance. The decisive win came two weeks after the Vols fell 86-69 at Kentucky.

“The last game, they just manhandled us and they were the more physical team,” Bone said. “You could just tell the way the game went, they just wanted it more.

Tennessee (26-3, 14-2 SEC) earned its 25th straight home victory to remain tied for first place in the Southeaste­rn Conference with No.13 LSU.

VCU 69, Richmond 66: The Rams (23-6, 14-2) closed in on the Atlantic 10's top seed, holding off their arch-rival (12-17, 6-10) at Robins Center.

Marcus Evans had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists for VCU, while reserve Malik Crowfield was 4 of 7 from 3-point range and had 14 points.

UR's Jacob Gilyard had 23 points. The Spiders hurt themselves with 8-of-19 free-throw shooting.

Indiana 63, No. 6 Michigan State 62: Justin Smith scored a career-high 24 points for the host Hoosiers (15-14, 6-12 Big Ten).

Cassius Winston led Michigan State with 20 points and 11 assists. But he committed a turnover and missed a jumper as the Spartans (23-6,14-4) pushed for the go-ahead basket in the final stretch.

No.14 Purdue 86, Ohio State 51: Junior guard Carsen Edwards scored 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting, helping the Boilermake­rs (22-7, 15-3) take sole possession of first place in the Big Ten.

No. 3 Duke 87, Miami 57: RJ Barrett had 19 points and 10 rebounds, fellow freshman Cameron Reddish added 19 points and the Blue Devils rolled at home.

With national Player of the Year candidate Zion Williamson sidelined for a third straight game with a mild right knee sprain, the Blue Devils (25-4, 13-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) never trailed and shot 57 percent.

No. 18 Florida State 78, N.C. State 73: Reserve Mfiondu Kabengele scored 16 points, and Trent Forrest added 11 of his 13 in the second half in Tallahasse­e.

Forrest was quiet early but finished 5 of 10 from the floor with six rebounds and three assists for the Seminoles (23-6,11-5).

D.J. Funderburk fouled out with 1:09 left, after scoring 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds for N.C. State (20-9, 8-8).

Syracuse 79, Wake Forest 54: Tyus Battle scored 21 points, and Syracuse held Wake Forest without a basket for 13 1/2 minutes in the second half in Winston-Salem, N.C., to end a two-game skid.

Syracuse (19-10, 10-6 ACC) had lost at home to then-No. 1 Duke and Tuesday at fifth-ranked North Carolina.

Chaundee Brown had 14 points for the Demon Deacons (11-17, 4-12).

No. 13 LSU 74, Alabama 69: Skylar Mays scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half, including a late dunk, and Javonte Smart had 19 to lead the Tigers in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

No.19 Wisconsin 61, Penn State 57: Brevin Pritzl scored 17 points on 5-for-5 shooting for the Badgers. Pritzl, a reserve for Wisconsin (20-9,12-6 Big Ten), also went 3 for 4 at the line.

Saint Louis 81, George Mason 71: Jordan Goodwin had a seasonhigh 24 points and Tramaine Isabell had17 for the host Billikens (18-11, 9-7 Atlantic10 Conference).

Jamal Hartwell II had 15 points for the Patriots (16-13,10-6).

Campbell 64, Radford 62: Jordan Whitfield sank two free throws with four seconds left Saturday to lift the Camels to the Big South regular-season title and the host role for the conference tournament.

The Camels closed the regular season with four straight victories.

Chris Clemons, one of the nation's top scorers, had 30 points and Andrew Eudy had 19 points and three blocks for Campbell (19-11, 12-4), who won the top seed with a two-game sweep of Radford. The Camels edged Radford 68-67 Jan. 30.

Mawdo Sallah had 14 points Saturday for the Highlander­s (20-10, 12-4).

Gardner-Webb 66, Longwood 47: DJ Laster had 21 points as Gardner-Webb stretched its home win streak to 14 games in Boiling Springs, N.C.

David Efianayi had 18 points for Gardner-Webb (20-11, 11-6 Big South).

Jaylon Wilson had 16 points and Jordan Cintron 14 for the Lancers (15-16, 5-11).

VMI 81, The Citadel 78: Garrett Gilkeson and Sarju Patel scored 19 points apiece for the host Keydets, while Bubba Parham added 15 points and nine assists.

Greg Parham had 12 points for VMI (10-20, 4-14 Southern Conference).

Women

CNU 79, Mount St. Mary 52: A night after upending pod host Gettysburg in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, the Captains rolled past the Knights to reach the round of 16. It was CNU's 11th consecutiv­e victory.

Old Dominion 79, Marshall 53: The Monarchs (18-9, 9-6 Conference USA) bolted to a 23-9 firstquart­er lead and had no problems with the Thundering Herd (15-13, 9-6) before 2,408 fans at Constant Center. Ajah Wayne scored 21points and Aziah Hudson15 to lead ODU.

High Point 104, Hampton 98: The Panthers (20-7, 13-3 Big South) outlasted the Pirates (15-12, 11-5) in a dizzying game at the HU Convocatio­n Center.

Laren VanArsdale scored 33 points and Kaylah Lupoe scored 22 for HU, while Mahaley Holit had 14 points and12 rebounds.

Bria Gibson scored 26 for High Point.

Coppin State 54, Norfolk State 51: The Spartans (14-13, 9-5 MidEastern Athletic Conference) lost at Echols Hall despite La'Deja James' 10 points.

The Eagles (4-23, 4-11) got 17 points from Jalynda Salley, whose go-ahead layup with 2:39 left started a decisive 7-0 run for a 53-47 lead.

VCU 61, Davidson 54: TheRams (21-8, 13-3) clinched the top seed for the Atlantic 10 tournament with a win at Siegel Center.

Bethel High graduate Nyra Williams had seven points, five rebounds and two steals.
