TRIBUTE ACTS, MUSIC FRONT FERGUSON LINEUP

- By Mike Holtzclaw Staff writer

The lineup for the Ferguson Center’s 2019-20 season is wide-ranging, from rock bands and their tribute acts to classical music and contemporary dance.

But when Bruce Bronstein, the venue’s executive director, glances at the roster — which was released this week — he finds himself drawn to the night when the 1,700-seat theater will be transformed into an intimate parlor.

On Oct. 17, the show, titled “At Home with Sir James Galway and Lady Jeanne Galway,” will present the renowned husband-and-wife flautists from Ireland in a unique manner. The performance honors James Galway’s impending 80th birthday.

“Few musicians, especially classical, rise to the legendary status of Sir James,” Bronstein said. “Sir James and Lady Jeanne are inviting us into their living room for an evening of music and stories from his 60-year career.

“The intimacy of the evening is special. Yes, there will be some of the most beautiful music ever played, but the opportunity to hear their personal stories will be such an incredibly rare and unique experience.”

James Galway has sold more than 30 million albums, and he has played with such stars as Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Pink Floyd (at the band’s famous “Wall” show at Berlin in 1990), as well as on the soundtracks to the “Lord of the Rings” films.

The full 2019-20 schedule and ticket information are av a i l a b l e at fergusoncenter.org, and questions can be directed by phone at 757-594-8752.

Two popular TV shows will be re-created on stage at the Ferguson — “The Price is Right Live” on Oct. 16, and “The Bachelor, Live On Stage” on April 24, 2020.

Details are still coming together on the “Bachelor” presentation, but it will involve a local bachelor, as well as appearances by “previous favorites” from the hit TV reality show.

The Christmas lineup at the Ferguson will include performances by jazz sax player Dave Koz (Dec. 7), Christian singer Chris Tomlin (Dec. 8), and the Magical Cirque Christmas (Nov. 30).

The dance portion of the schedule will feature Richmond Ballet (Oct. 5), Alonzo King (Nov. 12) and Flex Avenue (Feb. 5).
