In these finals, Bruins and Warriors are the champions once again
Several local athletes collect individual gold
NEWPORT NEWS — Western Branch senior Shadajah Ballard and Nansemond River senior Kori Carter have had stellar high school careers.
Both have won many individual state titles and led their respective schools to numerous state crowns.
And on Saturday, they had one more chance to do it.
Both succeeded, but it took monumental performances from each to deliver team titles.
Ballard won the girls 100meter dash (11.88), 100 hurdles (13.47) and 200 (24.25) to help the Bruins win their sixth consecutive state title in Class 6.
Carter was just as impressive. The Clemson-bound senior won the 100 hurdles (13.95) and 300 hurdles (43.13). But it was her anchor leg in the meet’s final race — the 4x400 relay — that helped the Warriors come from behind and win their sixth straight Class 5 state title.
They weren’t the only victors as Hampton Roads won numerous individual state titles.
Bethel senior Edward
Richardson III went out on top with victories in the 200 and 400. Richardson won the 400 in 46.55 to break his own state record. He returned later in the day to win the 200 in 21.32 to set another meet record.
His teammates also did well. Jahnelle Saunders won the girls high jump (5-4) and was third in the 100 hurdles. Jalani Davis won the girls shot put with a throw of 43-7¾.
Also, Kecoughtan junior Erin Weigel finished as runner-up in the 800 in a time of 2:13.69.
Maury made a run on the girls’ side in Class 5, led by Raquel Hawkins, who won the triple jump (39-2), and teammate Destiny Hooks, who was third in the pole vault.
Oscar Smith did well on the boys side, thanks to seniors Kurt Powdar and Aaron Shirley.
Powdar, who will run for Florida, won the 110 hurdles in 13.66. He also was runnerup in the 300 hurdles and high jump. Shirley won the 300 hurdles (36.90) and was runner-up in the110 hurdles. Other winners included: Grassfield’s Jenae Bowers won the shot put (43-5).
Landstown sophomore Mia O’Neil won the 400 (54.70).
G ra s s f i e l d ’s Azad Williams won the shot put (60-7).
Ocean Lakes freshman Aniya Mosley won the 800 in 2:13.28.
Winning relays included Salem’s girls in the 4x100 in Class 5, Oscar Smith’s girls in the 4x100 in Class 6 and Norview’s boys in the 4x100.
Salem was led by Abiah Olds, Andraeh Armstrong, Lyric Hoggard and Makhi Jarrett, who ran 47.26.
The Tigers were led by SaMoan Rookard, Zaria Hall, Kenya Chambers and Kijah Daveport.
The Pilots were led by Dion Davis, Ahsan Johnson, Dale Johnson and Zayquan Lincoln.
In Class 4, Churchland’s Layla Anderson won the100, 100 hurdles and 200 to lead the Truckers. Teammate Ameya Williams won the shot put (41-2½). And DaQuan Felton won the 300 hurdles (38.82).
Deep Creek’s Jalen Jones won the long jump at 21-6 ½. He also placed as the runnerup in the triple jump.
Class 3
Tabb’s boys captured the team championship at Liberty University in Lynchburg behind the efforts of EJ Bell and Zach Coldsnow.
Bell won the long jump at 21 feet, 4.5 inches, and set a Class 3 meet record by winning the high jump with a clearance of 6 feet, 9.5 inches.
Coldsnow, a multi-sport standout, won the discus with a school-record throw of 163-10. He won the shot put for the fourth consecutive time, thanks to a mark of 55-9.
Norcom’s Jasmine Gilliam won the 100 hurdles (15.21) and 300 hurdles (45.81).
Booker T. Washington sprinter Tru Crenshaw won the100 (11.16) and 200 (21.99).
Bookers freshman Jhakeiba Barber finished fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 200. She also ran on the victorious 4x100 relay team along with Shenequa Battle, Swayne Clennon and Aniya Few.
Class 2
The Bruton girls’highlights i ncluded Karena Glass’photo-finish victory in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.26 seconds.
Faith Lohr’s sixth-place finish in the 3,200 meters, the 4x100 relay’s third-place finish, seventh-place runs by Ava Veith (1,600), Amena Scanlon (100 meters) and the 4x400 relay, and an eighth-place showing by the 4x800 relay sparked the Panthers’girls.
The Bruton boys won the 4x400 relay and got fifth place from their 4x800 relay. Case Jones, Joey Mahoney, Seth Shafer and Josh Hamman comprised the victorious quartet.
Class1

National Invitation
Norfolk Collegiate finished second in the National Invitation team race regatta on Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio.
The team of Ray Domena, Parker Purrington, Chris Robertson, Matthew Wright, Sam Beck, Alex Schuck, Adam Elci, Harrison Thomson and Robert Chase finished the opening day in a three-way tie for first.
A lack of wind canceled the regatta’s second day, and the Oaks finished second in a tie-breaker.

Class 6 Region A championship
First Colonial 2, Landstown 1, PKs
The Patriots won 7-6 on penalty kicks Saturday at Grassfield in a match that took two days to complete.
First Colonial’s Miles Cooper scored in the 19th minute on a penalty kick before play was suspended for inclement weather 12 minutes before the half.
Naddim Lissa’s penalty kick in the 49th minute equalized for the Eagles.
James White scored the winning PK in the eighth round.

Princess Anne 1
Erik Eads scored twice in the final minutes, and the Hawks rallied late Friday night to stun the Cavaliers for the region title at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.
Princess Anne scored in the 52nd minute to take the lead.
Carl Hocking scored in the 68th minute to tie the match for Hickory.
