Beavers’ reign ends with pair of defeats at home

Defending champion Oregon State was the first national seed to exit the NCAA baseball tournament, falling 4-1 Saturday to Creighton to finish the Corvallis Regional at 0-2.

The 16th-seeded Beavers lost 7-6 Friday to Cincinnati, then couldn't get their offense untracked against the Bluejays.

Greenville Regional

At the rain-plagued Greenville Regional, Campbell held N.C. State scoreless in the only inning played Saturday to complete a 5-4 victory in the first round. East Carolina then met Quinnipiac in the initial game for both teams.

Chapel Hill Regional

Jonathan Embry, a former Coastal Plain League all-star with the Peninsula Pilots, belted a two-run homer as Liberty defeated Tennessee 6-1 late Friday night. The Volunteers were one of the 13 No. 2 seeds that fell to No. 3 seeds in the first round.

Embry's home run came off Grassfield High alum Garrett Stallings, who gave up four runs, three earned, and 10 hits in 5 1⁄ in

3 nings, striking out three and walking none.

Tennessee bounced back Saturday to eliminate UNC Wilmington 10-3. Third baseman Andre Lipcius, a Lafayette High graduate batting third for the Volunteers in both games, has gone 1 for 9 in the regional, dropping his season average to .303.

Elsewhere

Louisville Regional: Jeremy Gaines' two-run double capped a three-run sixth inning, Matt Walker threw a six-hitter, and Illinois State upset top-seeded Louisville 4-2 the winners' bracket.

Hitless for three innings against the nation's No. 7 seed and Cardinals ace Reid Detmers (11-4), the regional third-seeded Redbirds (36-24) scored first in the fourth on Joe Aeilts' RBI double. Louisville (44-16) went ahead 2-1 in the sixth on Tyler Fitzgerald's RBI grounder and Logan Wyatt's run-scoring single, but ISU quickly answered with three runs off two hits.

Athens Regional: Bobby Morgensen homered twice and drove in five runs, powering Florida Atlantic to a 10-6 win over Mercer in an Athens Regional eliminatio­n game.

Nashville Regional: Ridge Winand singled in the winning run in the 13th inning, and Ohio State eliminated McNeese 9-8.

Oxford Regional: Andrew Naismith had a pinch two-run double in the eighth inning as Jacksonvil­le State rallied late to beat Illinois 7-5.

Baton Rouge Regional: Trevor Hauver had three hits and drove in two runs to help Arizona State oust Stony Brook 13-5.

Starkville Regional: Alex Toral knocked in four runs, Adrian Del Castillo hit two doubles and Miami beat Southern of Baton Rouge, La., 12-2 in an eliminatio­n game.

Atlanta Regional: Jake Wright and Parker Chavers each homered to help lead Coastal Carolina to a 9-4 victory over Florida A&M in an eliminatio­n game.

Lubbock Regional: Jack Leftwich took a perfect game into the sixth inning, Kendrick Calilao hit one of four Florida homers while driving in five runs, and the Gators cruised past Army 13-5 in an eliminatio­n game. Josh White homered off Leftwich (6-5) with one out in the sixth to end the bid for a perfect game.

Morgantown Regional: Hunter Coleman hit two home runs to lead Texas A&M to an 11-2 win over Fordham in an eliminatio­n game. Aggies pitcher Asa Lacy (8-4) didn't allow a hit until Andy Semo's single with two outs in the fifth inning.
