More than 1,000 virus cases reported in Va. on Saturday

Virginia officials reported 1,078 coronaviru­s cases in the past 24 hours, according to the state’s department of health.

Saturday’s update brings the state total to 43,611 cases. Of those, 41,529 are confirmed and 2,082 are probable.

The seven-day rate of positive tests for the state is 13%, not including antibody tests. That is slightly lower than it was on Friday.

Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, Gov. Ralph Northam has said he wants to see a14-day downward trend in the percentage of positive coronaviru­s cases and hospitaliz­ations, as well as an increase in the number of tests and personal protective equipment available between each phase before moving forward. He said Thursday in a news conference the downward trends are “encouragin­g.”

So far, 303,430 tests have been given, not including antibody tests. It’s an increase of a little more than 7,000 tests.

The number of people hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19 is 1,471, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Associatio­n, slightly less than Friday. Of those patients, 990 have tested positive and 481 are awaiting test results. It’s fewer positive patients than Friday, and fewer waiting for results. So far, 5,745 patients with the virus have been discharged after being hospitaliz­ed, about 97 more than Friday.

There have been 1,370 deaths, a rise of 12 reported overnight.

In southeaste­rn Virginia, Accomack County continues to lead the region in cases, with 863, up 36 from Friday and 12 have died.

Elsewhere in Hampton Roads, here are the latest numbers, compared to Friday.

Norfolk: 490 cases (up 20); 6 deaths (no change)

Portsmouth: 307 cases (up 13); 11 deaths (no change)

Suffolk: 314 cases (up 3); 32 deaths (no change)

Hampton: 197 cases (up 5); 3 deaths (no change)

Newport News: 258 cases (up 1); 10 deaths (no change)

James City County: 202 cases (no change);15 deaths (no change)

Isle of Wight: 128 cases (up 1); 3 deaths (no change)

Northampto­n County: 230 cases (up 2); 20 deaths (no change)

Poquoson: 7 cases (no change); no deaths

York: 72 cases (no change); 3 deaths (no change)

Williamsbu­rg: 44 cases (no change); 4 deaths (no change)

Mathews: 5 cases (no change); no deaths

Middlesex: 15 cases (up 1); no deaths

Gloucester: 31 cases (up 1); 1 death (no change)

The number of cases reported in long-term care facilities is 4,798 and they account for 778 deaths (up 4), according to the VDH.

Virginians older than 80 have the highest number of deaths, with 712. There are 2,665 cases. Here is how the age groups break down across the state:

Across the state, 21,812 women have COVID-19 and 667 women have died. A total of 21,412 men have COVID-19 and 687 have died. Sixteen deaths did not have a reported sex and 387 cases did not have a reported sex.
