State reports more than 1,200 new coronaviru­s cases, 18 deaths

The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,217 new coronaviru­s cases Saturday, bringing the state’s tally to 118,809.

At least 2,568 Virginians have died from the virus as of Saturday morning, an increase of 18 from Friday.

Of the total cases, 113,623 are confirmed and 5,186 are probable, meaning those patients are symptomati­c and have had a known exposure to the illness.

Throughout the state, there have been 9,266 cases in long-term care facilities and 1,335 deaths, according to data from the VDH.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive PCR tests — the common diagnostic test which detects the virus — increased slightly to 6.9%.

Virginia reported 16,197 new PCR tests were performed, increasing the total to 1,555,487.

As many as 1,101 people are hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19, according to the Virginia Hospital and

Healthcare Associatio­n.

Of those, 791 have confirmed cases and 245 are awaiting test results. So far, a total of 14,957 COVID-19 patients have been discharged.

Here are the latest numbers for the region compared with Friday. The larger number represents the number of cases reported in each locality since the pandemic began.

The VDH has occasional­ly reported a decrease in the number of deaths for a locality in the daily reports. When asked about it, a spokesman for the state’s health department said some data may be entered incorrectl­y, or the department will find out later that the patient lived in another city.

York: 451 (up 7); 5 deaths (no change)

In Virginia, people older than 80 account for 5,240 cases and 1,242 deaths. Here’s how the rest of the age groups break down for cases and deaths:

70-79: 5,815 cases (up 62), 650 deaths (up 4)

60-69: 11,137 cases (up 97), 400 deaths (up 2)

50-59: 17,071 cases (up 144), 175 deaths (up 1)

40-49: 19,252 cases (up 156), 70 deaths (up 1)

30-39: 21,409 cases (up 184), 24 deaths (up 1)

20-29: 23,549 cases (up 329), 5 deaths (no change)

10-19: 9,898 cases ( up 174), 0 deaths (no change)

0-9: 4,302 cases (up 39), 0 deaths (no change)

The VDH did not report ages for 1,136 cases and two deaths.

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 60,945 women have had cases and 1,245 women have died, while 57,154 men have had cases and 1,314 men have died. Of the state tally, 710 cases don’t have a reported sex and nine deaths don’t have a reported sex.
