Liberty 40, La.-Monroe 7

LYNCHBURG — Treon Sibley and Damario Douglas starred on special teams as the Flames beat Louisiana-Monroe 40-7 on Saturday.

Sibley recovered a dropped snap by punter Daniel Sparks in the end zone for a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and blocked a punt that Chancellor Smith recovered to give Liberty a 31-0 edge in the third quarter. Douglas had a 38-yard punt return that led to Liberty’s first points and returned another 73 yards for a fourth-quarter TD.

Malik Willis, who sat out Liberty’s last game with an injury to his left arm, returned to throw for 177 yards and rush for another 87, including a touchdown.

Liberty, in its third FBS season, is 4-0 for the first time since

2008. The Flames outgained the Warhawks 400-198.

Colby Suits, who came in averaging more than 260 yards passing to lead the Sun Belt, was just 13 of 29 for 78 yards and two interceptions for ULM (0-5).

Because of state COVID restrictions, attendance was limited to 1,000 fans.

Army 14, The Citadel 9

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Sophomore Jemel Jones ran for a score and threw for another as the Black Knights (4-1) gained their sixth straight home win, beating the Bulldogs (0-4).

Jones threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Reikan Donaldson for a 7-3 advantage with 2:57 before halftime. Jones then finished a 14-play, 62-yard drive with a 5-yard TD run near the end of the third quarter for a 14-3 lead.

The Bulldogs tried to make a game of it when Jay Smith picked off Jones and returned the ball 18 yards to Army’s 2-yard line. Darique Hampton ran for a TD, the 2-point conversion try failed, and the The Citadel reduced the deficit to 14-9 with 3:21 left.

Maurice Bellan — in relief of Jones, who suffered an injury in an attempt to tackle Smith — converted a fourth down on the game’s final play.
