No Lawrence next week vs. Notre Dame

-

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence will not play for the topranked Tigers at No. 4 Notre Dame next week after testing positive for COVID-19.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Lawrence would miss his second straight week because of the virus. Swinney was informed Thursday of Lawrence’s test and ACC protocol requires at least a 10-day isolation period, plus medical testing post-isolation.

Freshman backup DJ Uiagalelei will make his second college start with Lawrence sidelined. The Tigers beat Boston College 34-28 on Saturday without Lawrence.

The Tigers had their latest round of coronavirus testing on Friday.

Swinney said before the game Lawrence was in good spirits and doing well. The coach said Lawrence spoke to the team that day via Zoom.

Illinois’ QB tests positive: Illinois starting quarterback Brandon Peters was not available for Saturday’s loss to Purdue, the Illini announced hours before kickoff. Peters and tight end Griffin Moore were announced as having tested positive COVID-19 and were ruled out against the Boilermakers. Both tested positive on Thursday. Several other players were ruled out because of contact tracing. Peters and Moore are eligible to return Nov. 21 against Nebraska, according to Big Ten rules. Players in contact tracing will also miss next week’s game against Minnesota, though the university did not list who was out specifically for contact tracing. Purdue beat Illinois 31-24.

White leads No.5 Georgia: Zamir White rushed for a carer-high 131 yards and a touchdown, Stetson Bennett also ran for a score and No. 5 Georgia beat Kentucky 14-3 on Saturday for its 11th straight win in the series. Their scores opened both halves as the Bulldogs (4-1 Southeastern Conference) improved to 5-1 after byes under coach Kirby Smart. Georgia’s 215 yards on the ground nearly outgained the Wildcats’ total yardage (229). Bennett completed 9 of 13 passes for 131 yards, with two interceptions.

No. 23 Iowa State keeps Kansas winless: Kansas entered Saturday’s game against No. 23-ranked Iowa State as an 0-5 football team - the five losses by an average of 30 points per contest. The trajectory toward a possible winless season continued on Halloween as the Cyclones (4-2, 4-1) downed the Jayhawks 52-22 in a Big 12 game at Booth Memorial Stadium. KU (0-6, 0-5), which trailed 20-7 at halftime — it would have been 20-10 had Jacob Borcila converted a 33-yard field goal try instead of missing against a strong wind with one second left in the first half — entered as four-touchdown underdogs.

Ridder keeps No. 7 Cincy undefeated:

Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder spread the wealth around, throwing touchdown passes to three different receivers and running for two himself, leading the undefeated and No. 7 Bearcats to a surprisingly easy 49-10 win over Memphis, the defending American Athletic Conference champion.

No. 10 Chants rout Georgia State: Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Chadwell could sense something special was about to unfold. “I was like, ‘We’re ready to go or we’re getting ready to walk into a trap because we were so full of ourself,’ ” Chadwell said. “But we had a great week in all three phases, and then Friday night they were locked in. So I felt good coming in, and after they doinked that field goal and we went right down the field, you could sense our guys saying, ‘Here we go.’” Grayson McCall passed for 254 yards and four touchdowns, Jaivon Heiligh scored twice, and No. 20 Coastal Carolina cruised to a 51-0 victory over Georgia State on Saturday. CJ Marable added two rushing touchdowns and 100 all-purpose yards for the Chanticleers (6-0, 4-0 Sun Belt Conference). Coastal Carolina has its most wins in a single season since joining FBS in 2017.

Boise State QB out: Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier did not travel for the Broncos’ game at Air Force on Saturday, a school spokesman confirmed, but a reason was not provided for his absence. BSU had to turn to Jack Sears, a transfer from USC. Bachmeier completed 20 of 28 passes for 268 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 42-13 win against Utah State last week. He threw for 1,879 yards as a true freshman last season.

No. 4 Notre Dame rolls: Kyren Williams ran for two touchdowns, Ian Book passed for another and No. 4 Notre Dame moved on to its biggest game of the season with a dominant defensive performance, stifling Georgia Tech 31-13 on Saturday. Book completed 18 of 26 passes for 199 yards in another efficient performance for the Fighting Irish (6-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).
