Petersburg | submitted by Kathy Johnson of Suffolk

In the summer of 2020, my husband Bob and I took to the road intending to visit a lake in Petersburg where we had previously been and found many types of ducks. When we arrived in town, I missed my turn and found myself lost in downtown Petersburg. We immediately noticed some huge structures in or near the roadway. Research revealed them to be concrete/granite piers from an old railway bridge across the Appomattox River near the Virginia State University campus. Throughout its history, the bridge was rebuilt numerous times for various reasons, including a fire, and was finally torn down in 1970.
