Police arrested a Newport News man Wednesday after he allegedly struck a vehicle with gunshots on Interstate 664.

Donte Michael-Lewis Gee, 26, was charged with shooting at an occupied vehicle and taken to Newport News City Jail.

Dispatchers received a call around 6:15 p.m. about a person in a Honda sedan “brandishing” a firearm on the interstate, north of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, state police said in a news release.

“The driver of a Honda sedan was seen pointing a firearm at several motorcycles while driving through the northbound lanes of the tunnel,” the release said. “Witnesses observed the Honda exit the tunnel, pull over onto the shoulder, and a male exited the vehicle with a firearm in hand.”

The car left the scene before state police arrived.

A man said he witnessed part of the incident while driving behind the green Honda before entering the tunnel and told The Daily Press he saw Gee “brandishing a gun.” But there also were two motorcyclists arguing with Gee.

“The green sedan flew by, and you could hear the motorcycles coming,” the man, who asked not to be named, said over the phone. “They both had the same black jacket on, black sunglasses, black helmet and black face covering. One of them was screaming, like fighting, with the driver (in the Honda). He was right beside him, inches away from the door for like a minute.”

The man said he saw one motorcyclist pull a weapon.

“We were a couple cars back in the right lane. They were arguing. The motorcyclist, with his right hand, it looked like he pulled a gun from (under) his butt,” the he said.

The man said he does not know whether it was a firearm, but that it looked like a weapon. He said he did not hear any gunshots.

Around 6:30 p.m., Newport News police stopped the Honda at 39th Street and Marshall Avenue, near the Huntington neighborhood.

A Virginia Beach woman later told state police her car had been shot at during the same time frame.

The woman said she was driving with her four children in the southbound lanes of Interstate 664 around 6 p.m. when she heard gunshots, the release said.

She found a bullet hole in the back of her vehicle and a round inside when she arrived home. No injuries were reported, police said.
