ODU, Charlotte split

No. 25 Old Dominion (30-11, 16-7 Conference USA) rolled past No. 15 Charlotte 14-2 in Saturday’s Game 2 to earn a doublehead­er split in Norfolk. Winner Hunter Gregory (6-1) pitched his third complete game of the season. The Monarchs scored seven runs in the second inning, highlighte­d by a Kyle Battle grand slam, and Thomas Wheeler’s threerun triple highlighte­d a six-run fourth.

In Game 1, LuJames Groover III had two hits and two RBIs as the 49ers (31-13, 18-5) won 6-2. Winner Andrew Lindsey (6-1) and Christian Lothes combined to pitch a two-hitter. Andy Garriola and Brock Gagliardi drove in the Monarchs’ runs.

Charlotte and ODU will play their eighth game of the year against each other at 3 p.m. today, the series finale.

Florida A&M swept host Norfolk State 12-4, 5-4 to take a 2-1 lead in a series that concludes today with a noon game.

In the opener Saturday, FAMU took a 9-1 lead with a seven-run fifth inning. Tucker Rayburn drove in four runs for the Rattlers, who had 13 hits. Dionte Brown had two hits and two RBIs for the Spartans.

In Game 2, NSU fell behind 2-0 and 4-2 but caught up each time. The Rattlers (17-27, 11-8 MEAC) went ahead to stay on Rowell’s RBI bunt single in the sixth. Brown scored twice and had two hits for the Spartans (19-23, 15-8).

Adam Smith and Noah Overton pitched a combined one-hit shutout as UNC Wilmington (22-16, 6-8 CAA) snapped William & Mary’s three-game winning streak with an 11-0 home victory. Ben Williamson singled in the first at-bat for the Tribe.

Christophe­r Newport (18-8, 10-4 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference) rallied from a fiverun deficit in Game 1 and went on to post a 14-7, 15-9 road sweep of winless Southern Virginia.

Eric O’Brien and Scott Crosson each drove in four runs in the opener for the Captains. In Game 2, Jay Cassady had five RBIs.
