Tides pick up 1st victory of season
At last, after a canceled 2020 season and three losses to start 2021, the Norfolk Tides can cherish a victory.
The Tides beat the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 5-3 on Friday night before 3,455 fans after dropping the first three of their six-game Triple-A East series in Florida.
Jesus Sanchez’s two-run homer off Norfolk starter Keegan Akin put the Shrimp ahead 2-0 in the first inning, but unlike in the first three games the Tides recovered.
They took their first lead of the season with a three-run fourth, capped by a Brett Cumberland infield single that scored Jahmai Jones and Yusniel Diaz.
The game was tied at 3-all in the seventh inning before back-toback home runs by Mason McCoy and Ryan McKenna put Norfolk ahead 5-3.
Winner Konner Wade (1-0) held Miami’s Triple-A affiliate to two hits in five innings, striking out five and walking four.
Fernando Abad and Manny Barreda each pitched a shutout inning to finish off the triumph.
