AROUND THE HORN

-

Rangers: Khris Davis was activated from the injured list Saturday, marking the slugger’s first time on the Rangers’ active roster for a game since being acquired in trade that sent longtime shortstop Elvis Andrus to the Athletics. Davis, an outfielder and designated hitter, opened the season on the injured list because left quad strain suffered in a spring training game March 23. The Rangers got Davis, catcher Jonah Heim, and a minor league pitcher from the A’s just before spring training Feb. 6 when it sent Andrus to the West Coast. Heim was in the starting lineup for Saturday night’s game against the Mariners, but Davis was not. To make room on the active roster for Davis, outfielder Eli White was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock. After making an opening day roster for the first time in his career, White was hitting .127 with no homers and four RBIs in 20 games this season. He had only one hit his last 30 at-bats over his last 12 games.

Cardinals: Yadier Molina drove in three runs in his return from the injured list, Paul Goldschmidt homered and in a 9-8 victory over the Rockies. Goldschmidt also had three RBIs and Nolan Arenado hit another double against his former team. The Cardinals have won eight straight and 14 of their last 15 games against the Rockies at Busch Stadium. Molina hadn’t played since April 26 because of a strained tendon in his right foot. The All-Star catcher was leading the Cardinals in batting, homers and RBIs when he was hurt. Carlos Martínez (3-4) wound up winning his third straight start. He allowed five runs on six hits and five walks in five innings. Alex Reyes struck out the side in a scoreless ninth for his 10th save after narrowly escaping an eighth inning jam.

Cubs: Pinch-hitter Matt Duffy had a go-ahead single in the seventh i nning, reliever Keegan Thompson pitched three scoreless innings for his first major league victory in a 3-2 win over the Pirates for the Cubs’ fifth straight win. Willson Contreras and Eric Sogard each drove in a run for the Cubs, who have won seven of nine to improve to 17-16. Thompson (1-0) allowed two hits and a walk following starter Trevor Williams, who gave up two runs and five hits in four innings. Andrew Chafin worked a scoreless eighth and Craig Kimbrel got the final three outs for his sixth save. Duffy pinch hit for Thompson and blooped a two-out single to right off reliever Clay Holmes to score Jason Heyward — who led off with a walk against Sam Howard (2-2) and stole second — with the winning run. “As a pinch hitter, you have to realize it’s difficult and not put too much pressure on yourself,” Duffy said. “I try to tell myself it’s like starting a game and I can get a hit in my first at-bat.”

Angels: David Fletcher drove in three runs on three hits, Shohei Ohtani had two RBI doubles and the Angels snapped their fivegame losing streak with a 9-2 victory over the slumping Dodgers late Friday night. Justin Upton and Taylor Ward homered in the Angels’ four-run second inning, and Mike Trout had a late RBI triple as the Halos opened the Freeway Series with a positive jolt from only their fifth win in 16 games. “We got the mojo back on our side a little bit,” said Griffin Canning, who pitched six-hit ball into the sixth inning for the Angels. “Hopefully we can keep bringing that same energy. It was a really good atmosphere. It was a lot of fun.”
