W&L uses a 17-0 run to coast past VWU

Richie Manigault scored 19 points off the bench and Washington & Lee used a 17-0 flurry in the first half to roll to an 83-58 ODAC victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday in Lexington.

The Marlins (11-9, 7-4) have dropped two of three games since winning six straight.

Anthony Jackson scored nine points to lead VWU, which got only a combined 19 points out of its starters. The Marlins shot 35% from the field, 22.2% from beyond the arc and 50% from the line.

VWU will visit Eastern Mennonite at 5 p.m. Monday in a game reschedule­d from Jan. 26.

Winthrop 69, Hampton 57: D.J. Burns Jr. had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles (15-8, 8-2 Big South), who outscored the Pirates 39-26 in the second half at the HU Convocatio­n Center.

Hampton (6-14, 2-7) hit just 36.5% (19 of 52) from the floor, with Russell “Deuce” Dean and DeAngelo Epps leading the Pirates with 10 points apiece.

VCU 71, Duquesne 62: Hason Ward had 13 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and two steals for the Rams (14-7, 7-3), who bounced back from Wednesday’s 30-point home loss to Dayton.

Ace Baldwin had 13 points, seven assists and three steals for VCU, and Marcus Tsohonis hit a trio of 3-pointers on his way to 11 points.

Tre Williams had 19 points for the Dukes (6-14, 1-7), who led 9-2 and 26-18. An 11-0 run gave VCU a 46-40 edge, and Duquesne was on the way to its seventh loss in a row.

La Salle 83, George Mason 78: The Explorers (7-13, 2-8 Atlantic 10) ended a five-game slide by upending the Patriots (11-9, 4-3) in Philadelph­ia behind Jack Clark’s 18 points and five rebounds.

Xavier Johnson had 16 points and eight assists for George Mason, which erased a double-digit firsthalf derficit to go ahead by four but yielded late.

Jhamir Brickus’ 3-pointer gave La Salle an 81-75 lead with 23 seconds left.

Davidson 78, George Washington 73: Luka Brajkovic had 30 points and eight rebounds as the Atlantic 10-leading Wildcats (19-3, 9-1) averted an upset bid by GW (8-13, 4-5) in Washington to win their third in a row.

James Bishop scored 26 for the Colonials, who led by as many as 11 in the first half. Brajkovic’s threepoint play at the 56-second mark broke a 73-73 tie, and the Wildcats shut out GW the rest of the way and got free throws from Foster Loyer and Michael Jones.

Tulane 86, East Carolina 66: Jaylen Forbes had 26 points and Jalen Cook had 19 for the Green Wave in New Orleans. DeVon Baker added 12 points and Kevin Cross had 10 points and six assists for Tulane (10-10, 7-4 American Athletic).

Vance Jackson had 27 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates (11-11, 2-8), who have lost six straight. Tristen Newton added 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Hofstra 85, James Madison 78 (OT): Aaron Estrada had a careerhigh 35 points for the Pride (14-9, 6-4 CAA) against the Dukes (13-8, 4-6) in Hempstead, New York.

After going without a point and blowing a seven-point lead in the final 2 minutes of regulation, Hofstra bounced back in overtime with 14 points, nine by Estrada.

Zach Cooks had 16 points for Hofstra, which shares third place with Delaware. Darlinston­e Dubar added 12 points, while Hampton High graduate Jalen Ray had eight points, eight assists and five steals.

Charles Falden scored a careerhigh 25 for JMU, while Vado Morse added 21 and Alonzo Sule had 10.

Warren Wilson 68, Apprentice 67: The Owls (4-11, 2-4 Eastern Metro Athletic Conference) earned a series split with the Builders (9-11, 3-2), edging them in Asheville, North Carolina.

In a game that was close all the way, Apprentice’s Corey Joyner was fouled at the buzzer on a 3-point try. He hit two free throws but missed one, finishing with 22 points.

Apprentice won 74-64 Jan. 28 in the teams’ first meeting, but Warren Wilson bounced back at home.

Johnson & Wales 66, Regent 55: The Wildcats (10-9), from Charlotte, North Carolina, came to Churchland High in Portsmouth and earned their sixth victory in their last seven games. The Royals fell to 3-12.
