Norfolk State splits DH against Coppin

Host Norfolk State edged Coppin State 2-1 in Game 1 of a doublehead­er, the Spartans’ second consecutiv­e one-run win to start their MEAC series, but then lost the nightcap 11-3. The Eagles (8-14, 4-3 MEAC) plated all 11 of their runs in the last three innings and will try to gain a series split at noon today.

In Game 1, NSU (7-13, 4-3) scored twice in the fourth, thanks to two walks, two errors and a hit. Former Green Run High pitcher Jackson Sanchez retired the Eagles 1-2-3 in the seventh for a save.

R.J. Sales pitched six innings for the victory as UNC Wilmington (13-9, 1-1) evened its CAA-opening series at William & Mary (10-10, 1-1) with a 10-0 shutout at Plumeri Park. They’ll settle the series with a 1 p.m. game today.

Sales struck out six, walked three and gave up six hits. Casey Green took the loss, yielding six earned runs in 4 innings.

Taber Mongero, Brooks Baldwin and Dillon Lifrieri, the top three hitters in UNCW’s order, all had two hits, as did Jac Croom. Mongero, Baldwin, Croom and Matt Suggs scored twice each. The Tribe had nine hits, two by David Hogarth, but stranded 12 runners.

Winner Jacob Faivre, a Deep Creek High alumnus, struck out 10 in six innings, giving up two runs and four hits, as Shenandoah defeated Virginia Wesleyan 12-4 in Virginia Beach to start an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doublehead­er. In Game 2, the Marlins scored four runs in the ninth to force an 8-8 tie, and the game was called off after 11 innings.

In Game 1, the Hornets (16-6-1, 3-2-1) went ahead 5-2 with a threerun sixth and padded the margin with a five-run seventh.

In Game 2, the Marlins (10-91, 2-4-1) trailed 8-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, but back-toback home runs by Connor Hall and Matt Sinko pulled them even.
