Short comes up big

-

Even in a 5-36 season, players can find memorable moments. Such was the case for shortstop Luke Short, a Norfolk Christian alum from Virginia Beach who made 29 starts for Sewanee (the University of the South) in Tennessee.

He had three hits and a walk to help the Tigers upset host Birmingham-Southern, the thirdranked team in Division III, 16-7 in the first round of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament in Alabama. That avenged Birmingham-Southern’s three-game sweep of Sewanee in the regular season.

Friday in the tourney, Sewanee lost 4-3 to Hendrix and 9-5 to Birmingham-Southern, ending the Tigers’ season.

Short ended the year with a batting average of .272 and an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .709.
