Myong Sik “Sukie” Dowen, 82, of Newport News, VA passed away on Monday, May 2, 2022 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Sukie was born in KyonggiDo, South Korea to O Seh Yun and Lee Won Yo. As a child, she survived the Korean War during which she lost one of her brothers. As a young mother, she poured her love and strength into raising her three children while her husband served in Vietnam and other assignment­s as a soldier in the United States Army.

Sukie was a Peninsula resident for 50 years. She was well known and loved by customers at the Kyung Sung Korean Restaurant in Newport News, where she worked for over 20 years before retiring to spend time with her grandchild­ren.

She loved Jesus, children, animals, music, and gardening. She was a member of Virginia Love & Truth Church where she enjoyed singing with God’s family. She was passionate­ly devoted to her family and close friends.

She is survived by her childhood friend, Sun Ja Barber; three children: Charles H. Dowen, III and wife, Suzanne, Robert L. Dowen, Sandra Davoy and husband, Stanley; nine grandchild­ren, Claire, CJ, Kristin, Brooke, Christophe­r, Eric, Justin, Aaron, Charlie; a great grandson, Charlie; her favorite nephew and his family: Gea Bum Park, Jong Ju Lee, Edward, and Gavin; her sister, Suzanne Lewis; her niece, Jennifer Lewis; and a fluffy orange cat named Nabi.

She was predecease­d by her three brothers: O Yun Sik, O Gun Sik, O Pong Sik; and former husband, Charles H. Dowen, Jr.

A funeral service is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News. The family will receive friends immediatel­y following the service (7:15 pm – 8:00 pm). A private graveside service will

be held for family on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News.
