No. 3 Michigan survives scare vs. Illinois

- Staff, wire reports

Jake Moody made a go-ahead, 35-yard field goal with nine seconds left to give No. 3 Michigan a 19-17 home win over Illinois.

The Wolverines (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) played much of the second half without star running back Blake Corum, who grabbed his left knee after being tackled just before halftime.

X-rays, though, gave coach Jim Harbaugh and his players a sense of relief.

“Structurally good, which is great news,” Harbaugh said.

The Illini fell to 7-4, 4-3. Michigan will now turn all its attention to playing rival and second-ranked Ohio State on the road, where they have not won since 2000, with a spot in the Big Ten championship game and likely in the College Football Playoff at stake.

No. 1 Georgia 16, Kentucky 6: Kenny McIntosh ran for 143 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, and the defense excelled for the Bulldogs (11-0, 8-0 SEC) against the host Wildcats (6-5, 3-5).

No. 2 Ohio State 43, Maryland 30: The Buckeyes (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) held off the host Terrapins (6-5, 3-5), though Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 293 yards and two scores for Maryland. Ohio State’s Dallan Hayden had 146 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries.

No. 4 TCU 29, Baylor 28: Griffin Kell kicked a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the game as Texas Christian (11-0, 8-0 Big 12) remained undefeated with a win over the Bears (6-5, 4-4) in Waco, Texas.

The Horned Frogs scored nine points in the final 2:07 to avoid a potential playoff-busting loss. Emari Demercardo scored on a 3-yard TD run to get the Frogs within 28-26, but he was unable to pull in a pass on the 2-point conversion attempt. After kicking deep, TCU used all three of its timeouts while forcing a three-and-out, and got the ball back with 1:34 left at its 31. Nine plays later, Kell made the game-ending kick.

No. 8 Alabama 34, Austin Peay 0: Jase McClellan rushed for a careerhigh 156 yards and two touchdowns and Jermaine Burton caught a pair of scoring passes from Bryce Young in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide (9-2) took awhile to get going against the FCS Governors (7-4) in a BryantDenny Stadium that wasn’t much more than half-full. But McClellan and Burton had their biggest games for the Tide. Burton posted his first 100-yard receiving game since transferring from Georgia, with seven catches for 128 yards.

No. 11 Penn State 55, Rutgers 10: The Nittany Lions (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) rolled past the host Scarlet Knights (4-7, 1-7). Sean Clifford threw for 157 yards and a touchdown.

No. 15 Kansas State 48, West Virginia 31: K-State (8-3, 6-2) moved one win away from clinching a berth in the Big 12 championship game by beating the Mountaineers (4-7, 2-6). The Wildcats finish the regular season at home next Saturday against Kansas. They are looking to join TCU in the title game Dec. 3 in Arlington, Texas.

The Wildcats led 41-25 at halftime. Those were the most first-half points for Kansas State in 14 years.

K-State’s Will Howard threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score.

No. 23 Oregon State 31, Arizona State 7: Damien Martinez ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns for the Beavers (8-3, 5-3 Pac-12), who won for just the second time at ASU since 1972. They were 1-19 on the road against the Sun Devils (3-8, 2-6) in that span.

Navy 17, No. 20 Central Florida 14: Fullback Daba Fofana rushed for 114 yards as the Midshipmen (4-7, 4-4 American Athletic Conference) won in Orlando without completing a pass.

Navy dominated possession of the ball and gained 248 yards, all on the ground. Xavier Arline threw incomplete on Navy’s only pass. The loss dropped UCF (8-3, 5-2) out of first place in the AAC.

Mikey Keene replaced quarterback John Rhys Plumlee in the second half and immediately led the Knights to their only touchdown of the game.

Keene completed his first three passes for 79 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Javon

Baker. Plumlee then passed to Baker for the 2-point conversion, tying it at 14 early in the third quarter.

John Marshall forced Keene’s fumble on the Knights’ next possession. It was recovered by Colin Ramos at the UCF 34, and Bijan Nichols’ 45-yard field goal lifted Navy to a 17-14 lead with 8:22 left in the third.

Marshall had a school-record four sacks, bringing his season total to 10 also a Navy record.

Army 34, UConn 17: Braheam Murphy ran for 124 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown to give the host Black Knights (4-6) a 20-17 lead midway through the third quarter.

A 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyhier Tyler, a Woodside High grad, stretched the Black Knights’ lead to 27-17 late in the third. Victor Rosa rushed for 105 of his 111 yards in the first half and a touchdown for UConn (6-6).

Houston 42, East Carolina 3: Clayton Tune completed 32 of 44 for 435 yards and four TDs for the visiting Cougars (7-4, 5-2 American) against the Pirates (6-5, 3-4).
