Heritage alum lifts JMU past Hampton

Anna Goodman, playing her first game this season after rehabilita­tion from her second torn ACL, had 13 points and four rebounds in 20 minutes Saturday as James Madison (8-2) pulled out a 57-52 victory over Hampton. That extended the Dukes’ winning streak to five.

Goodman, from Heritage High in Newport News, was a key contributo­r last season until her injury.

Camryn Hill scored 22 and Madison Buford 13 for HU, which trailed 30-18 at halftime but — primarily behind Hill — outscored the Dukes 25-12 in the third quarter. Hampton was ahead 46-42 with 7:33 to go in the game, but JMU bounced back. Kiki Jefferson had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Dukes.

Hampton made just 16 of 54 field-goal attempts and 13 of 29 at the free-throw line, though a Nylah Young foul shot pulled the Pirates even at 52 at the 2:51 mark. A Claire Neff basket put JMU ahead 54-52 with 1:38 to go, and a Peyton McDaniel 3-pointer boosted the edge to 57-52 with 43 seconds to go.

JMU outrebound­ed Hampton 46-31 but committed 19 turnovers to the Pirates’ nine. HU has lost six of its last seven games.

High alumna and Longwood transfer Kyla McMakin led Saint Louis (3-11) with 23 points.

No. 10 UCLA 75, Cal State Bakersfiel­d 47:

The Bruins (11-1) cruised past the Roadrunner­s (2-5) in Los Angeles. Londynn Jones and Emily Bessoir scored 12 points each and Gabriela Jaquez had 11 for UCLA.

Grace Hunter and Morgan Edwards scored 13 apiece for the Roadrunner­s, who committed 22 turnovers to UCLA’s 11.
