Evelyn Mae Dawson
Evelyn Mae (Stowell) Dawson, 90, also known as Mom, Granny and Aunt Evie, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2022. Although born in Washington, D.C., she was a very proud lifelong Phoebus resident. Whether being a member of the Phoebus school's PTA, the Pocahontas Club or Phoebus Ladies Auxiliary, Evelyn was always connected to her community.
She was the youngest and last surviving of seven siblings. Evelyn was always a hard worker and supported her two children as a single parent while working in the hospitality industry in Phoebus and Hampton. Raising two successful children, Jack and Jill (deceased), was always her proudest accomplishment, and she was delighted to tell you about them.
When family came into town, you knew you were going to be spending time in Colonial Williamsburg…which became her “happy place.” If someone got out car keys she knew she was going to have a fun day going somewhere… anywhere was fine with her. She really enjoyed riding around Phoebus and Hampton reminiscing about places where she and her extended family had lived and the memories they made. Celebrating Christmas meant so much to her that she kept Christmas decorations and pictures out year-round. She loved reading the newspaper, accompanied by pots of coffee, and keeping up with current events and politics which she often discussed with her son and sister, Madeline Sanzo, on their long phone calls.
If you went to her home, you would be walked down the “Hall of Family” and got to see dozens of pictures and hear about the people who made her happiest. Evelyn is survived by her son Jack (Charme), four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. It's hard to imagine what life will be without her….fortunately there are many memories that will make us smile when we think of time spent with her.
