No. 4 Jayhawks dodge upset

Kansas rallies from 15-point halftime deficit to edge OSU in Big 12 opener

KJ Adams scored the go-ahead basket with 5.8 seconds left, Kansas stopped Oklahoma State twice at the other end and the No. 4 Jayhawks finished a comeback from 15 down to beat the visiting Cowboys 69-67 in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Jalen Wilson scored 20 points and Adams 14 to lead the Jayhawks. Bryce Thompson hit seven 3-pointers and matched a career high with 23 points for OSU (8-5).

The Jayhawks (12-0) have won 32 consecutiv­e league openers dating to the 1991-92 season.

They trailed 45-30 at halftime but used a 22-5 run in the opening minutes of the second half to take the lead. The Jayhawks were ahead until Thompson, who began his career with Kansas, drilled a 3-pointer with 14.8 seconds left to tie the game at 67.

No. 3 Houston 71, Central Florida 65:

Tramon Mark scored 19 points, Marcus Sasser had 18 and the Cougars (14-1, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) held on for a home victory over UCF (10-4, 1-1).

The Cougars shot 38%, including 6 of 19 on 3-pointers. Houston forced 13 UCF turnovers and converted them into 20 points.

Darius Johnson had 17 points and eight rebounds for UCF.

No. 5 Arizona 69, Arizona State 60: Azuolas Tubelis scored 21 points, Oumar Ballo had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and the visiting Wildcats (13-1, 2-1 Pac-12) withstood a second-half comeback by the Sun Devils (11-3, 2-1) in Tempe.

Kerr Kriisa had 12 points and five assists for the Wildcats.

No. 6 Texas 70, Oklahoma 69: Marcus Carr hit the go-ahead basket for the Longhorns (12-1) against the Sooners (9-4) in the Big 12 opener for both teams. It was Texas’ fourth straight win in Norman, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma led for most of the second half behind 22 points from Grant Sherfield. But in the final 30 seconds OU freshman

Milos Uzan’s 3-point attempt bounced off the back of the rim and the Longhorns hit six straight free throws down the stretch.

It was the sixth win in a row for Texas.

No. 10 Gonzaga 111, Pepperdine 88:

Drew Timme’s 35 points and 10 rebounds led the host Bulldogs (12-3, 1-0 West Coast Conference) over the Waves (7-8, 0-1).

Iowa State 77, No. 12 Baylor 62:

Gabe Kalscheur and Caleb Grill combined for 41 points for the Cyclones (10-2) against the Bears (10-3) in the Big 12 opener for both teams in Ames, Iowa. Kalscheur finished with 23 points, including a 3-pointer to give the Cyclones a 69-54 lead with 5 minutes, 22 seconds left. Grill added 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Adam Flagler led Baylor with 20 points, 18 in the first half.

No. 18 TCU 67, Texas Tech 61:

Mike Miles Jr. scored 23 points for the Horned Frogs (12-1), who rallied in the second half in Fort Worth, Texas, in the teams’ Big 12 opener for their 10th consecutiv­e victory. The Red Raiders (10-3) led by 13 just before halftime and were still up by nine midway through the second half.

No. 22 New Mexico 76, Wyoming 75:

The Lobos (14-0, 2-0 Mountain West) stayed alongside No. 1 Purdue as the only men’s Division I unbeatens, edging the Cowboys (5-9, 0-2) in Laramie, Wyoming. Jamal Mashburn Jr. hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to give UNM the lead, and Wyoming missed two shots to go ahead.

George Mason 62, Richmond 58:

Ronald Polite scored 22 points, hitting 6 of 9 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line for the Patriots (9-5, 1-0 Atlantic 10) against the Spiders (7-7, 0-1) in Fairfax. Tyler Burton led the Spiders (7-7) with 21 points and six rebounds. Richmond also got 15 points from Matt Grace.

VCU 80, La Salle 67: Ace Baldwin had 19 points and six assists as the Rams (10-4) shook off a 7-0 deficit to beat the Explorers (6-8) in an Atlantic 10 opener at Siegel Center. Jalen DeLoach had 14 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks for VCU. Josh Nickelberr­y led La Salle with 21 points.

East Tennessee State 64, VMI 50:

Jalen Haynes had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Buccaneers

(6-9, 2-0 Southern Conference) as they beat the Keydets (5-10, 0-2) in Lexington.

The Keydets were led by Sean Conway, who posted 12 points and six rebounds. Tyler Houser added 11 points, and Asher Woods totaled eight points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Radford 69, Presbyteri­an 51:

DaQuan Smith’s 20 points and Villanova transfer Bryan Antoine’s 13 guided the host Highlander­s (7-8, 1-1 Big South) past the Blue Hose (5-10, 1-1). Marquis Barnett scored 12 for Presbyteri­an.

Longwood 67, Campbell 42: Michael Christmas, a former Landstown High and James Madison forward, Walyn Napper and Isaiah Wilkins had 11 points apiece for the Lancers (10-5, 2-0 Big South) in their road win.

James Madison 72, Marshall 66: Terrence Edwards had 16 points and Xavier Brown, a freshman from Jamestown High, added 11 for the Dukes (11-4, 2-0 Sun Belt). They became the first team to hand the Thundering Herd (12-3, 1-1) a home loss. Taevion Kinsey led Marshall with 18 points.

East Carolina 79, Wichita State 69: Brandon Johnson had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates (10-5, 1-1 American Athletic Conference) against the Shockers (7-7, 0-2) in Kansas.

Armed forces

Nevada 75, Air Force 69:

Jarod Lucas’ 28 points led the Wolf Pack (12-3, 2-0 Mountain West) past the Falcons (9-6, 0-2) in Colorado. Jake Heidbreder had 22 points for Air Force, which never led.

No. 11 UCLA 67, Washington State 66:

Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 20 points, Adem Bona made the winning basket with 19 seconds left and UCLA (11-2, 3-0 Pac-12) overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to the host Cougars (5-9, 0-3).

No. 15 Wisconsin 76, Western Michigan 66:

Steven Crowl scored 20 of his career-high 25 points after halftime as Wisconsin ended a layoff of more than two weeks and won its fifth straight.

Army 80, Lehigh 78: Ethan Roberts had 23 points and Chris Mann buried a go-ahead 3-pointer with 22 seconds remaining for the host Black Knights (7-7, 1-0 Patriot League).
