Bennett tops UVA’s list with 327th win

Tony Bennett set a Virginia record with his 327th victory as the Cavaliers’ head coach as his 11th-ranked team defeated Syracuse 73-66 Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena.

Armaan Franklin scored 16 points and Kadin Shedrick had 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals for UVA (11-3, 3-2 ACC), which jumped to an 11-2 lead and was ahead of the Orange (10-6, 3-2) throughout.

Bennett received an honorary basketball after the game with previous record-holder Terry Holland’s wife, Ann, watching from the stands.

“This is not a ‘me’ award, this is an ‘us’ award,” he said.

Joe Girard scored 19 for the Orange.

Northeaste­rn 79, Hampton 63:

The Pirates’ losing streak reached seven games with a defeat at the HU Convocatio­n Center.

The Huskies (6-9, 2-2 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) had lost two games in a row, including Thursday’s at William & Mary. But they controlled the first half, outscoring the Pirates 45-28.

Hampton (3-13, 0-4), still seeking its first conference triumph during its initial CAA season, had lost to Hofstra on Thursday night. The Pirates will try to regroup for their Wednesday trip to face William & Mary at 7 p.m. at Kaplan Arena.

Christophe­r Newport 75, York 72: The Captains (15-2), ranked seventh by d3hoops. com, survived an upset bid by the Spartans (7-7) in overtime in southeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia. Matthew Brodie had 19 points for CNU, Jahn Hines added 16 and Ty Henderson 14, including a 3-pointer that forced overtime.

Jayden Rowe had 26 points and five assists for York. Jackson Mascari had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

The Captains led 40-28 at halftime and repelled one York comeback, going ahead 63-56 on a Hines layup with 6:21 left in regulation. But CNU hit a drought and the Spartans bounced back, going ahead 68-65 on a Mascari 3-pointer at the 44-second mark. Henderson sank a tying 3 with 32 seconds left, and neither team scored again in regulation.

In overtime, Brodie hit a 3-pointer to put CNU ahead 74-70 with 1:55 to go. York nearly tied the game on a layup, but CNU’s Rodney Graves blocked it off the backboard and Barber got the rebound. Barber sank 1 of 2 free throws with 26 seconds left, and Barber blocked a 3-point try by Mascari to all but end the game.

Apprentice 86, Central Internatio­nal 48: Shawn Eley had 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the Builders (9-5, 4-0 New South Athletic Conference) breezed past the Cardinals in the Richmond area, giving Apprentice its fifth victory in a row.

Karree Smith added 11 points and Tony Epps had 10 points and eight assists for Apprentice, which led 50-18 at halftime and shot 59% from the field (36 of 61) for the day. Central Internatio­nal hit just 20 of 60 shots.

Roanoke 65, Virginia Wesleyan 64:

The Marlins nearly overcame a seven-point deficit in the final seven minutes, but went scoreless in the final 2:27 at home.

Justin Kuthan scored 17 points and Efosa U-Edosomwan had 16 to lead Roanoke (12-2, 5-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference).

Omari Deveaux paced VWU (11-3, 3-3) with 18 points and Amarion Wilson had 17.

VCU 89, Davidson 72: Ace Baldwin scored 19 points and added eight assists as VCU (11-5, 2-1 Atlantic 10) beat Davidson (9-7, 2-2) in Richmond. The Rams trailed 10-0 but dominated the next 30 minutes as David Shriver sank six 3-pointers for 18 points.

George Mason 86, Loyola Chicago 75: Josh Oduro and DeVon Cooper both scored

17 points and Oduro added 12 rebounds for the Patriots (10-6, 2-1 Atlantic 10) in Fairfax. Malik Henry added 15 points for George Mason, which broke away from a 35-35 halftime tie.

The Ramblers (6-9, 0-3) were led by Philip Alston, who posted 23 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Ben Schwieger added 17 points and nine rebounds.

Longwood 85, Winthrop 71: The Lancers (12-5, 4-0 Big South), who trailed 45-36 at halftime in Farmville, surged past the Eagles (7-10, 2-2) for their seventh consecutiv­e victory behind Walyn Napper’s 15 points and seven assists and DA Houston’s 16 points. Isaiah Wilkins added 14 points, DeShaun Wade had 13 and Michael Christmas 10 for Longwood. Wade and Christmas are from Virginia Beach.

Memphis 69, East Carolina 59: DeAndre Williams scored 19 points for the host Tigers (12-4, 2-1 American Athletic Conference), who used a 22-0 run to go ahead 51-36 against the Pirates (10-7, 1-3). Kendric Davis added 14 points, six assists and three steals.

Brandon Johnson finished with 15 points, three steals and three blocks for ECU.

Radford 63, Gardner-Webb 59: DaQuan Smith had 15 points and seven rebounds as the Highlander­s (8-9, 2-2 Big South) beat the Runnin’ Bulldogs (7-9, 2-2) in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

Justin Archer and Josiah Jeffers had 12 points apiece for Radford, which led throughout the second half. DQ Nicholas led Gardner-Webb with 17 points and five assists, but Anthony Selden missed a layup with 2 seconds left that would have tied the game.

Chattanoog­a 85, VMI 78: Graduate transfer Jake Stephens, who played his first four seasons for VMI, haunted his former team by scoring 37 points as the Mocs (10-7, 2-2 Southern Conference) overcame the Keydets (5-12, 0-4) in Tennessee. Asher Woods paced VMI with 19 points.

Clemson 75, Pittsburgh 74:

Chase Hunter scored 17 points, Hunter Tyson and PJ Hall added double-doubles and the visiting Tigers (13-3, 5-0) won a showdown over the Panthers (11-5, 4-1) for the top spot in the ACC.

The Tigers, who have won five straight and are off to their best start since 1996-97, are the last unbeaten team in the conference. The Panthers, whose five-game streak ended, were trying for their first 5-0 start since joining the ACC in 2013. They did it five times in the Big East. Jamarius Burton paced Pitt with 28 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Down eight with 5:35 to go, Clemson pulled even with a

burst before Brevin Galloway hit a jumper to give the Tigers the lead. Burton and Hunter traded baskets, and the Tigers led 73-71 with 45 seconds left.

Pitt had two shots to tie it before Blake Hinson was whistled for a foul. Tyson made two free throws o give the Tigers a two-possession lead with nine seconds remaining. Nike Sibande sank a 3-pointer with a second left for the Panthers.

North Carolina 81, Notre Dame 64:

Armando Bacot scored 21 points with 13 rebounds, Caleb Love added 18 points and North Carolina (11-5, 3-2) defeated Notre Dame (8-8, 0-5) in Chapel Hill.

Love and Bacot combined for 25 points in the first half, when UNC built a 13-point lead on its way to its sixth victory in seven games.

No. 16 Duke 65, Boston College 64:

Dariq Whitehead scored 18 points, Kyle Filipowski hit two clutch free throws and visiting Duke (12-4, 3-2) rebounded from a miserable loss at N.C. State by holding off Boston College (8-8, 2-3).

Filipowski finished with 15 points and nine rebounds and Mark Mitchell added 14 points for the Blue Devils. The Eagles saw their final opportunit­y evaporate when they missed a shot and the rebound went out of bounds in the final second.

Florida State 75, Georgia Tech 64:

Matthew Cleveland scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and FSU coach Leonard Hamilton picked up his 600th career victory as the Seminoles (5-11, 3-2 beat Georgia Tech (8-7, 1-4) in Tallahasse­e.

Wake Forest 80, Louisville 72:

Damari Monsanto knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the final three minutes for the Demon Deacons (11-5, 3-2 ACC), who held off a late rally by the host Cardinals (2-14, 0-5). Louisville has lost five games in a row.

Louisville trailed by 18 points after Cameron Hildreth’s jumper put the Deacons up 62-44 with 7:22 left, but Jae’Lynn Withers hit two 3s and Mike James knocked down three more as the Cardinals roared back to cut the deficit to 70-67 with 2:40 remaining.

No. 4 UConn 69, Creighton 60:

Big East Preseason Player of the Year Adama Sanogo scored 26 points and UConn (15-2, 4-2 Big East) bounced back from its first two losses of the season with a home win over Creighton (9-7, 3-2).

UConn’s big man hit 10 of 20 shots, including two 3-pointers, and pulled down nine rebounds. Jordan Hawkins added 17 points for the Huskies, who won their 17th straight game at Gampel Pavilion, their on-campus arena.

Washington State 74, No. 5 Arizona 61:

The visiting Cougars (7-10, 2-4 Pac-12) stunned the Wildcats (14-2, 3-2), ending their eight-game winning streak and holding them to 31.7% shooting. Mouhamed Gueye scored 24 for Washington State, while Azuolas Tubelis led Arizona with 29.

No. 6 Texas 54, Oklahoma State 46: Marcus Carr scored 12 points to help visiting Texas (13-2, 2-1 Big 12) defeat Oklahoma State (9-6, 1-2) in the Longhorns’ first game since coach Chris Beard was fired.

Texas improved to 6-1 under interim coach Rodney Terry.

No. 7 Alabama 78, Kentucky 52: Star freshman Brandon Miller had 19 points and seven rebounds to help Alabama (13-2, 3-0 SEC) dominate Kentucky (10-5, 1-2) in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide held the Wildcats to just 29% shooting.

No. 8 Tennessee (12-2, 2-0 SEC, won three in a row) at South Carolina (7-7, 0-1), 3:30 p.m.

Illinois 79, No. 14 Wisconsin 69: Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 24 points and Coleman Hawkins made six 3s and scored 20 points to lead Illinois (10-5, 1-3 Big Ten) to a home win over Wisconsin (11-3, 3-1).

Chucky Hepburn scored 22 points and Steven Crowl added 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Badgers.

No. 25 Iowa State, No. 17 TCU:

Gabe Kalscheur scored 15 points, including a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining, for the Cyclones (12-2, 3-0 Big 12) against the Horned Frogs (13-2, 2-1) in Fort Worth, Texas.

Kalscheur’s game-winner from way past the arc came just after TCU had just claimed the lead for the first time since early in the first half. Mike Miles led TCU with 18 points, including two of three free throws with 23 seconds for a one-point lead with 23 seconds remaining.

No. 18 Xavier 88, Villanova 80:

Zach Freemantle had 29 points, 11 rebounds and four assists as the visiting Musketeers (13-3, 5-0 Big East) extended their winning streak to nine by outscoring the Wildcats (8-8, 2-3). Cam Whitmore scored 26 for Villanova.

No. 20 Missouri 85, Vanderbilt 82:

Kobe Brown scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, DeAndre Gholston scored 17 points and Missouri (13-2, 2-1 SEC) beat Vanderbilt (8-7, 1-1).

D’Moi Hodge also scored 17 points and Noah Carter scored 16 as Missouri improved to 7-0 all-time at home against Vanderbilt.

No. 23 College of Charleston 75, Delaware 64:

Dalton Bolon had 13 points and eight rebounds as the host Cougars (16-1, 4-0 CAA) pulled away late to gain their 15th consecutiv­e victory. The Blue Hens fell to 9-7, 1-2.
