How to celebrate MLK Day in Hampton Roads

Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinat­ed 55 years ago in Memphis as he prepared for a march in support of garbage collectors seeking fair wages.

In a strange foreshadow­ing, two months to the day before his death, King gave a sermon in his hometown of Atlanta that concluded with what he hoped his own eulogy would include.

“If any of you are around when I have to meet my day, I don’t want a long funeral. And if you get somebody to deliver the eulogy, tell them not to talk too long,” he said.

“I’d like somebody to mention that day that Martin Luther King Jr. tried to give his life serving others.”

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the national holiday that marks his birthday. Several Hampton Roads organizati­ons are holding community service events and concerts in honor of King. Here are a few:
