Norfolk State wins sixth game in a row

Kierra Wheeler scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Norfolk State’s women continued their early MEAC dominance Saturday in a 64-37 league win over Howard at Echols Hall.

The first-place Spartans (15-3, 3-0 MEAC) shot 43.8%, including 4 of 12 from 3-point range, and won every quarter for their sixth straight victory.

NSU has won its three MEAC games by an average of nearly 17 points.

Brooklyn Fort-Davis scored 10 points for Howard (6-10, 2-1), which was held to 27.7% shooting and committed 20 turnovers.

Camille Downs scored 11 points for the Spartans. Makoye Diawara added 10.

Old Dominion 63, Marshall 56:

Amari Young’s 17 points and 13 rebounds and Kaye Clark’s 16 points guided the Monarchs (12-7, 4-2 Sun Belt) to their fourth consecutiv­e victory and improved them to 9-0 at Chartway Arena this season. The Thundering Herd (9-8, 2-4) has lost four games in a row.

ODU committed just six turnovers, enabling the Monarchs to overcome 38.3% field-goal shooting (23 of 60) and 58.3% free-throw shooting (14 of 24).

Marshall had 18 turnovers and hit 40.4% (21 of 52) from the floor. Abby Beeman had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Herd.

Christophe­r Newport 86, Salisbury 38:

Katy Rader scored 23 points as the Captains (16-0, 2-0 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference), ranked No. 1 in the Division III coaches poll, dusted the Sea Gulls (6-13, 0-1) before 491 at Freeman Center. CNU hit 15 of 28 tries from 3-point range compared to Salisbury’s 1 of 4.

Rader sank 8 of 10 field-goal tries, including 7 of 9 long-range attempts, in 21 minutes. Sondra Fan had 13 points and Hannah Kaloi 12. Anaya Simmons had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Camille Malagar distribute­d nine assists.

Lynchburg 74, Virginia Wesleyan 40:

The Hornets (4-11, 3-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) went ahead by double digits in the first quarter and went on to beat the Marlins (5-11, 1-8) at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach.

Olivia Harris scored 18 points and Maddie Nimmo had 14 for Lynchburg.

VWU’s Adaje Williams had 19 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. She hit 6 of 13 fieldgoal attempts, but her teammates made just 8 of 44. The Marlins were 0 for 10 from 3-point territory, and they had 22 turnovers to Lynchburg’s 13.

James Madison 62, Georgia State 57:

The Dukes (16-2, 6-0 Sun Belt) led throughout the second half and turned back the Panthers (8-11, 2-4) in Harrisonbu­rg for their 13th consecutiv­e victory. Kiki Jefferson had 18 points and seven rebounds, and Stephanie Ouderkirk tied her career high with 13 points for JMU.

Jamia Hazell hit a jumper from the right elbow to put the Dukes ahead 61-57 with 1:02 to go, and Georgia State didn’t sink another shot as the Panthers lost their third game in a row.

No. 3 Ohio State 76, Nebraska 67:

Rebecca Mikulasiko­va had 25 points for the Buckeyes (18-0, 7-0 Big Ten), who opened a 13-2 lead and remained in front in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Sam Haiby scored 16 points for the Cornhusker­s (11-7, 3-4).

Late Friday

Towson 75, William & Mary 43:

After going ahead 10-4, the Tribe (6-9, 1-3 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) couldn’t deal with the Tigers (8-7, 2-2) in Maryland.

The Tribe hit fewer than a fourth of its shots (16 of 65). Sydney Wagner scored 11 points and Riley Casey nine, but they combined for 9-of-29 shooting.

Drexel 67, Hampton 51: The Dragons (13-3, 5-3), who rarely have three CAA defeats so early in the season, bounced back by beating the Pirates (5-9, 3-3) at the HU Convocatio­n Center.

Madison Buford scored 12 points, Nylah Young 11 and reserve Amyah Reaves nine for Hampton.

No. 2 Stanford 72, No. 8 UCLA 59: Haley Jones scored 16 points and Cameron Brink added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Cardinal (17-1, 5-0), who scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter to pull away from the Bruins (14-3, 3-2).

Charisma Osborne and Gina Conti scored 13 points apiece and Emily Bessoir had 10 for UCLA.
