Tribe upends UNCW on road

William & Mary registered its most notable victory of the season Saturday, upsetting UNC Wilmington 69-67 at Trask Coliseum for its first road triumph.

Freshman Charlie Williams hit 11 of 12 free throws and scored 15 points off the bench for W&M (8-10, 3-2 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n). Anders Nelson added 15 points, including two key free throws with 15 seconds remaining, and Ben Wight had 10 points.

Tribe freshman Jack Karasinski suffered an early injury and needed crutches.

The Tribe overcame a team that had won 13 of its previous 14 games, the only loss being a two-point decision this week to the 22nd-ranked College of Charleston. The Seahawks fell to 14-5, 4-2.

Trazarien White led UNCW with 21 points, and Malleck Harden-Hayes came off the bench to provide 14 points and seven rebounds.

Christophe­r Newport 90, Bridgewate­r State 79:

The Captains (16-3), ranked fifth by d3hoops.com, erased a sevenpoint halftime deficit, shot 55.6% (18 of 33) in the second half and overcame the Bears (11-5) in Massachuse­tts.

Matthew Brodie’s 20 points led CNU. Sophomore Caleb Furr posted a career-high 17 points, a dozen in the second half. Dante Kikuba scored 30 for Bridgewate­r State.

Salisbury 76, Apprentice 52:

A five-game win streak for the Builders (9-6) ended with a decisive home loss in Newport News. Shawn Eley scored 24 points for Apprentice, but none of his teammates produced more than six. Apprentice was just 2 of 20 from 3-point range.

Greg Bloodswort­h scored 22 points for the Sea Gulls (10-7). They led 19-2 with almost 6 minutes gone.

Washington & Lee 65, Virginia Wesleyan 48:

Robert DiSibio had 27 points and 12 rebounds for the Generals (11-6, 4-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference). They outscored the Marlins 38-21 in the second half, dooming VWU (12-4, 4-4) to a home defeat.

The Marlins, led by Jordan Crump’s 12 points and seven rebounds, hit just 19 of 60 field-goal tries, including 7 of 28 from 3-point range. W&L outscored VWU 13-3 in the first 4:16 of the second half and led by as many as 21.

George Mason 67, Davidson 65:

Josh Oduro led George Mason with 22 points, 16 in the second half, and closed the scoring with a free throw with 13 seconds left in Fairfax as the Patriots (11-7, 3-2 Atlantic 10) took down the Wildcats (9-9, 2-4), who have lost three games in a row.

Grant Huffman led the Wildcats with 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Davidson’s Foster Loyer, who also had 16 points, missed a 3-pointer to win.

St. Bonaventur­e 71, Richmond 63: Daryl Banks III and Moses Flowers had 20 points each for the Bonnies (9-9, 3-2 Atlantic 10) against the Spiders (10-8, 3-2) in Olean, New York. UR’s three-game winning streak ended.

Matt Grace led Richmond with 16 points.

Radford 75, Charleston Southern 70: DaQuan Smith scored 19 points, and Shaquan Jules added 18 points and 14 rebounds for the host Highlander­s (10-9, 4-2 Big South), who have won three consecutiv­e games. Claudell Harris Jr. finished with 31 points for the Buccaneers (7-10, 3-3).

Late Friday

VCU 63, Dayton 62: The Rams (13-5, 4-1) staged a miraculous comeback in Ohio, handing the Flyers (12-6, 4-1) their first home loss of the season and tying them for first place in the Atlantic 10.

David Shriver scored 18 points to lead VCU. Nick Kern made a layup with 16 seconds remaining for the game’s final points. Shriver shot 6 for 8 from beyond the arc.

Carolina University 115, Regent 84: The Royals fell to the Bruins (7-9) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was the fifth loss in a row for Regent (1-8).
