Hampton ends 10-game slide with first CAA win

Russell “Deuce” Dean and Marquis Godwin scored 21 points apiece Saturday as Hampton University broke through for its first Colonial Athletic Associatio­n victory, ending a 10-game overall losing streak with an 83-66 victory over Monmouth in West Long Branch, New Jersey.

The Pirates (4-17, 1-7 CAA) hit 10 of 19 3-point shots, including 5-of-6 accuracy by Godwin. Jordan Nesbitt had 12 points, and Kyrese Mullen had nine rebounds, five points and three blocks.

Myles Foster scored 22 and Jack Collins 18 for the Hawks (1-19, 0-7), who have dropped 11 games in a row. They were just 2 of 19 from 3-point range and 27 of 69 (39.1%) overall from the field; like Hampton, they’re in their first CAA season.

HU scored 12 consecutiv­e points for a 31-17 advantage with eight minutes left in the first half.

Monmouth pulled to 41-36 before nine unanswered points by the Pirates put them ahead by 14. The Hawks couldn’t get closer than five after that.

Guilford 65, Virginia Wesleyan 47:

The Marlins (13-5, 5-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) couldn’t get untracked against the Quakers (15-3, 8-1) in Virginia Beach, sinking just 16 of 45 fieldgoal tries.

Tyler Dearman had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Julius Burch added 12 points and 12 rebounds for Guilford, which led 15-2, saw VWU pull to 17-12, then surged ahead 32-15 by halftime. The margin remained in double digits through the second half.

Jordan Crump scored 10 points and Amarion Wilson nine to lead VWU.

George Mason 79, Rhode Island 72: Josh Oduro had 24 points, 14 rebounds and three steals as the Patriots (12-8, 4-3 Atlantic 10) beat the Rams (6-13, 2-5) in Kingston, Rhode Island. De’Von Cooper had 20 points for George Mason.

Brayon Freeman led the Rams (6-13, 2-5) with 25 points and two steals. URI also got 14 points and four steals from Brandon Weston.

The Citadel 60, VMI 52: Austin Ash’s 17 points, including 8-of-8 free-throw shooting led the Bulldogs (8-12, 3-5 Southern Conference) past the Keydets (5-16, 0-8) in Lexington. Stephen Clark had 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Citadel. Asher Woods and Rickey Bradley Jr. scored 13 apiece for VMI.

Longwood 58, Presbyteri­an 56:

Led by Isaiah Wilkins’ 14 points and Virginia Beach native DeShaun Wade’s 10, the Lancers (15-6, 7-1 Big South) edged the Blue Hose (5-16, 1-7) in Clinton, South Carolina. Zac Watson’s three-point play gave Longwood a 57-55 lead with 55 seconds remaining. Trevon Reddish posted 15 points and four assists for Presbyteri­an, which has lost seven games in a row.

Radford 95, High Point 80: DaQuan Smith scored 22 points, Justin Archer posted 18 points and 13 rebounds and the Highlander­s (12-9, 6-2 Big South) beat the visiting Pointers (10-10, 2-6). Zach Austin had 26 points for High Point.

Liberty 73, North Florida 62: Shiloh Robinson and Blake Preston both scored 17 points and Robinson grabbed 10 rebounds for the Flames (16-5, 7-1 Atlantic Sun) against the Ospreys (8-12, 3-5) in Jacksonvil­le. Preston shot 8 of 11 from the field. Jose Placer scored 19 for UNF.

Southern Mississipp­i 83, James Madison 70:

DeAndre Pinckney poured in 28 points and had five assists for the Eagles (17-4, 6-2 Sun Belt), who never trailed as they stayed unbeaten at home in Hattiesbur­g. Terrence Edwards scored 18 and Noah Freidel 14 for JMU (13-8, 4-4).

Apprentice 62, Virginia Peninsula Community College 46: Shawn Eley’s 19 points and seven rebounds and Avin Hawkins’ 13 points off the bench propelled the Builders (11-6, 6-0 New South Athletic Conference) over the Gators in Newport News. Apprentice has won seven of its last eight games.

TNCC’s Javion Majette had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Keshaun Johnson had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

George Washington 76, Dayton 69: James Bishop’s 27 points and seven assists helped the Colonials (10-9, 4-2 Atlantic 10) upend the Flyers (13-7, 5-2) in Washington. Brendan Adams added 18 points while shooting 11 of 12 from the free-throw line. He also had eight rebounds.

Late Friday

VCU 74, Richmond 62:

Jamir Watkins led VCU with 15 points off of the bench in a road victory at Robins Center. He also contribute­d 10 rebounds for the Rams (15-5, 6-1 Atlantic 10), who share the Atlantic 10 lead with Saint Louis after the Billikens defeated La Salle on Saturday. Richmond fell to 11-9, 4-3.
