Hines’ 33 points power No. 4 CNU; W&M falls

All-American Jahn Hines scored 33 points Saturday as Christophe­r Newport, ranked fourth nationally by d3hoops. com, overcame Salisbury 84-74 before 2,214 at Freeman Center.

Hines, a Norview High graduate, sparked a Captains team that trailed 47-44 after halftime to the Sea Gulls (10-11), who have lost four games in a row. Salisbury shot 54.3% (19 of 35) in the first half but just 33.3% (9 of 27) in the second.

CNU (18-3) hit 33 of 67 fieldgoal attempts, including 12 of 21 by Hines. Matthew Brodie scored 16 points and Trey Barber 12 for CNU.

Greg Bloodswort­h led Salisbury with 21 points, while Sean Carr had 19.

Towson 92, William & Mary 73: Cameron Holden had 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the host Tigers (16-7, 8-2 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) ended the Tribe’s two-game winning streak.

Holden recorded the second triple-double in Towson CAA history. Jerrelle Benimon had the first during the 2013-14 season.

Towson’s Charles Thompson added 20 points while shooting 9 of 10 from the field and had six rebounds and four blocks. Christian May recorded 14 points for Towson.

Anders Nelson finished with 22 points for the Tribe (9-14, 4-6). Ben Wight added 16 points and six rebounds for William & Mary, and Gabe Dorsey also had 12 points.

Towson took the lead with 4:47 left in the first half and did not relinquish it.

Bridgewate­r 54, Virginia Wesleyan 52:

Liam Caswell hit a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining, giving the Eagles (10-9, 5-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) a triumph over the Marlins (13-6, 5-6) in the Shenandoah Valley. It came just eight seconds after Omari DeVeaux’s layup had given VWU a 52-51 advantage. The Marlins overcame a nine-point deficit with an 11-1 binge for a 36-35 lead.

Western Carolina 71, VMI 65: Vonterius Woolbright’s 19 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists helped the Catamounts (12-11, 5-5 Southern Conference) beat the Keydets (5-18, 0-10) in Lexington for VMI’s 12th straight loss. Tyzhaun Claude scored 18 points and added 13 rebounds for WCU, while DJ Campbell, a freshman from Kecoughtan High, recorded 14 points.

VMI’s Tyler Houser recorded 23 points. Tony Felder added 11.

Radford 55, USC Upstate 52: Bryan Antoine scored 21 points and buried a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining to rally the Highlander­s (14-9, 8-2) in Spartanbur­g, South Carolina. Justin Archer added 11 points for Radford, which has won seven games in a row. Mysta Goodloe led the Spartans (9-12, 4-6) with 12 points.

Dayton 86, Richmond 60: Koby Brea scored 18 points off of the bench, hitting 6 of 7 3-pointers, to help the Flyers (14-8, 6-3 Atlantic 10) end a two-game slide. Daron Holmes added 17 points and nine rebounds, and Toumani Camara scored 16. Isaiah Bigelow led the Spiders (11-11, 4-5) with 19 points, but UR has dropped three in a row.

James Madison 58, Louisiana Monroe 45: Mezie Offurum scored 15 and Terrence Edwards 12 for the Dukes (15-8, 6-4 Sun Belt) as they beat the Warhawks (10-13, 6-4) before 6,429 in Harrisonbu­rg.

Apprentice 70, Christendo­m 63:

The Builders (12-6, 7-0) boosted their winning streak to three games and stayed unbeaten in the New South Athletic Conference by winning in Front Royal. The Crusaders fell to 5-7, 0-2.
