ODU starts fast, handles Coastal Carolina

Monarchs recover after loss to Texas State

Amari Young had 17 points and eight rebounds as the Old Dominion women defeated Coastal Carolina 78-64 Saturday before 2,587 at Chartway Arena. The Monarchs bounced back well from their Thursday home defeat to Texas State.

Also for ODU, Kaylen Nelson had 11 points in 11 minutes off the bench, Jada Duckett had eight points, four steals and three blocks, Brittany Jackson had eight points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench, and Jordan McLaughlin had six points, five assists and four steals.

Deaja Richardson led the Chanticlee­rs with 18 points.

The Monarchs (14-9, 6-4 Sun Belt) went ahead 10-2 in the first quarter and were in front by double digits for most of the game. The Chanticlee­rs (10-11, 5-5) pulled within 61-53 with 5:56 remaining, but couldn’t get closer than eight points.

Norfolk State 64, South Carolina State 43:

Deja Francis and Mahoganie Williams both scored 12 points, and NSU rode a huge first quarter to a win at Echols Hall.

The victory was the eighth in nine games and the 17th in a row at home for the Spartans (17-4, 5-1 MEAC), who shot 39.1% against S.C. State while making 6 of 20 from 3-point range.

NSU got out to a 22-9 lead in the first quarter and never trailed.

Nicole Gwynn scored 13 points for the last-place Bulldogs (1-18, 0-4).

Eastern Mennonite 60, Virginia Wesleyan 58, OT:

Mya Hamlet’s hook shot with 25 seconds left in overtime put the Royals (8-12, 3-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) ahead 59-58, and they held off the Marlins (6-13, 2-10) at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach to end a seven-game losing streak.

VWU’s Jada Norman missed a jump shot with 5 seconds left, and EMU got the rebound to end the Marlins’ hopes. Trinity Washington then made 1 of 2 free throws in the final second.

Hamlet had 21 points and eight rebounds. Adaje Williams had 13 points for 14 rebounds to lead the Marlins.

Christophe­r Newport 107, Pratt Institute 34: McKenna Snively sank eight 3-pointers and scored 32 points on 12-for-18 shooting as the Captains (19-0), ranked No. 1 in the Division III coaches poll, rolled to a Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Cannoneers (1-17) in Brooklyn, New York.

Snively was the first Captain to score at least 30 points since Sam Porter on Jan. 25, 2017, and just the third to hit as many as eight 3-pointers in a game.

No. 10 Iowa 80, Nebraska 76:

Caitlin Clark had 33 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (17-4, 9-1 Big Ten) against the Cornhusker­s (13-8, 5-5) in Iowa City.

Late Friday

William & Mary 62, UNC Wilmington 48: With another victory at Kaplan Arena, the Tribe (10-9) extended its winning streak to four and became 5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n for the first time in 16 years.

W&M harassed UNCW (4-15, 1-7) into 19 first-half turnovers and 23 for the game and, for the third

consecutiv­e home contest, never trailed.

Sydney Wagner paced the Tribe with 13 points.

Monmouth 69, Hampton 56: The Pirates (6-12, 3-5) lost to the Hawks (10-10, 5-4) in West Long Branch, New Jersey, in a clash of CAA newcomers.

Nylah Young and Camryn Hill had 16 points apiece for Hampton.

Christendo­m 70, Apprentice 59: The Builders’ seven-game winning streak ended as they lost to the Crusaders in Front Royal. Apprentice fell to 10-6, 0-2 in the New South Athletic Conference.

No. 3 Stanford 63, Oregon State 60:

Cameron Brink had 21 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks and the Cardinal (20-2, 8-1 Pac-12) extended their Pac-12 home winning streak to 20 games.

No. 25 Colorado 73, No. 8 UCLA 70, OT: Kindyll Wetta made a corner 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in overtime to snap a tie, and Colorado (16-4, 7-2 Pac-12) improved to 3-0 against Top 25 teams at home.

No. 9 Utah 83, Southern California 73: Alissa Pili scored 21 for the Utes (17-2, 7-2 Pac-12) against the Trojans (15-5, 5-4) in Salt Lake City.
