Chock, Bates defend their ice dancing title

Madison Chock and Evan Bates successful­ly defended their ice dancing title Saturday at the U.S. Figure Skating Championsh­ips, scoring 137.85 in the free dance for a top-place total score of 229.75.

The recently engaged couple has medaled at nationals in every season since 2013. That’s 11 straight years, which matches former training mates Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue (2012-22) for the most consecutiv­e years on the U.S. ice dance podium.

Caroline Green and Michael Parsons earned the silver medal with a free dance score of 126.06 for their program set to “Rhapsody in Blue,” while Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenk­o, who were fourth after the short program, scored 121.08 and moved up a spot to take the bronze.

Men’s college basketball: Grant Sherfield scored a season-high 30 points, and Oklahoma beat No. 2 Alabama 93-69 on Saturday . ... Jarace Walker had a career-high 25 points and seven rebounds, and No. 3 Houston rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat Cincinnati 75-69 on Saturday . ... Kobe Brown had 20 points, and D’Moi Hodge added 17 to help Missouri top No. 12 Iowa State 78-61 Saturday.

NBA: Joel Embiid won the battle of MVP candidates with 47 points and 18 rebounds as the 76ers beat Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets 126-119 Saturday.

NFL: The Chiefs activated tight end Jody Fortson from injured reserve and elevated wide receivers Marcus Kemp and Ihmir Smith-Marsette from the practice squad for Sunday night’s AFC title game.

Women’s college basketball: Oklahoma guard Taylor Robertson broke the Division I women’s basketball career record for 3-pointers with her first attempt Saturday as the No. 14 Sooners met No. 18 Iowa State. It was her 498th 3-pointer, breaking the mark Ohio State star Kelsey Mitchell set from 2014 to 2018.
