UNCW pays back the Tribe

Trazarien White scored 21 points and Donovan Newby had 20 off the bench as UNC Wilmington gained payback against William & Mary, defeating the Tribe 70-63 Saturday at Kaplan Arena to split their season series.

Chris Mullins led the Tribe with 19 points, and reserve Tyler Rice contribute­d 14. But W&M (9-16, 4-8 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) lost its third consecutiv­e game.

UNCW surged to a 15-2 lead, but W&M cut it to 29-28 before White scored the first half ’s final basket.

The Seahawks started the second half well, going ahead 38-29. They extended the lead to 56-43 on a Newby 3-pointer with 6:47 to go. W&M cut its deficit to five but could not get closer as UNCW avenged its 69-67 home loss in the first round of CAA competitio­n.

Christophe­r Newport 74, UC Santa Cruz 61:

The Captains (20-3, 2-0 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Confernece) improved to 6-0 when trailing at halftime this season, overcoming the Banana Slugs (8-12, 0-1) in the C2C Classic before 1,632 at Freeman Center. Trey Barber had 23 points and 12 rebounds for CNU, and Matthew Brodie added 10 points.

It was the 10th 20-victory season in John Krikorian’s coaching tenure. Ian McCloskey scored 21 points for UC Santa Cruz, which led 29-26 at the half.

Virginia Wesleyan 84, Washington & Lee 72:

Khai Seargeant had 27 points in 27 minutes as the Marlins (14-7, 6-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) ended a three-game slide by defeating the Generals (15-7, 8-5) in Lexington. Omari DeVeaux had 17 points, Jordan Crump 15 points and Amarion Wilson 12 points and 10 rebounds for VWU. W&L’s Robert DiSibio had 32 points.

Two free throws by Joey Lee gave VWU a 57-55 edge with 9:33 remaining, and the Marlins pulled away.

Radford 69, Winthrop 66:

DaQuan Smith scored 24 points as the Highlander­s (16-9, 10-2 Big South) ran their winning streak to nine with a home triumph over the Eagles (11-14, 6-6), whose victory streak ended at three.

Cory Hightower scored 22 on 9-of-11 shooting for Winthrop, which was scoreless in the last 3:54.

Longwood 74, Campbell 50: The Lancers (16-9, 8-4 Big South) halted their slide at three games as Isaiah Wilkins had 13 points and Longwood held Campbell to 35.7% shooting in Farmville. Jay Pal scored 15 for the Camels (10-14, 5-7).

Mercer 80, VMI 54: Jalyn McCreary netted 22 points as the Bears (12-13, 5-7 Southern Conference) dominated the Keydets (6-19, 1-11) in Macon, Georgia. Tony Felder scored 17 for VMI.

Loyola Chicago 69, George Mason 61: Philip Alston had 13 points as the host Ramblers (8-14, 2-8 Atlantic 10) beat the Patriots (13-11, 5-6). Malik Henry scored 14 for George Mason, which outrebound­ed Loyola 41-32 but shot just 32%.

James Madison 63, Appalachia­n State 57: After squanderin­g a 14-point lead in Boone, North Carolina, the Dukes (17-8, 8-4 Sun Belt) recovered for their fourth straight victory. ASU (13-12, 6-6), down 30-16 late in the first half, pulled even at 56 on a Terence Harcum 3-pointer with 2:25 to go. But Julien Wooden answered with a 3-pointer at the 1:04 mark, and JMU stayed ahead.

East Carolina 77, SMU 72: Brandon Johnson scored 27 points, hitting 4 of 6 3-point tries and all seven of his free throws, as the host Pirates (12-12, 3-8 American) overcame the Mustangs (8-16, 3-8).

Apprentice 81, Carolina Christian 78: The Builders (14-7, 9-0) stayed unbeaten in the New South Athletic Conference by edging the Centurions (3-11, 0-5). Shawn Eley dunked with 17 seconds left for the game’s last points, and the visitors’ Daishaun George missed a 3-point try to tie with two seconds left.

Late Friday

VCU 73, Saint Louis 67: Ace Baldwin Jr. scored a career-high 37 points as VCU (18-6, 9-2) tightened its hold on first place in the Atlantic 10 before a sellout crowd in Missouri. he Billikens (15-8, 7-3) were led by Richmond native Gibson Jimerson with 24 points.

Berkeley 77, Apprentice 66: The Builders lost a home non-conference game to the Knights (11-9) of New York, though Apprentice’s CJ Highsmith had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
