Admirals produce second win streak

-

For just the second time this season, the Norfolk Admirals are on a winning streak.

Griffin Lunn scored on a power play 4:49 into overtime Friday night in West Virginia, giving the Admirals a 4-3 victory over the Wheeling Nailers.

The winning play included an assist by Stepan Timofeyev, who netted the Admirals’ first two goals. His first came just seven seconds into the game, off assists by Eric Cooley and Lunn. But Wheeling scored twice in a 91-second span to go ahead 2-1 9:33 into the game, thanks to goals by Jack Van Boekel and Jordan Frasca.

Timofeyev’s second goal of the night, 6:18 into the second period, forced a 2-2 tie. Louie Roehl scored short-handed for the Nailers 10:21 into the middle period for a 3-2 lead.

After Danny Katic’s goal forced OT, Norfolk (10-33-1-2) went on a man advantage when Wheeling’s Brooklyn Kalmikov was called for slashing. Lunn capitalized with the game-ending goal exactly a minute later, beating goalie Brad Barone. Wheeling (19-21-50) dropped its fifth consecutive game; the first four were in regulation time.

Cale Morris made 24 saves for the victory, while Barone stopped 29 shots.

For the Admirals, it was a good follow-up from their 4-3 victory Wednesday over Reading. The only other time Norfolk, which has the ECHL’s worst record, won two games in a row was Dec. 10-11, when the Admirals swept back-to-back games against the Adirondack Thunder.

Norfolk went for its first threegame winning streak of the season in a rematch against the Nailers on Saturday night.
