Basile scores 33 for second straight game in Hokies’ win

Grant Basile scored 33 points, including 16 in a near six-minute stretch of the second half, and Virginia Tech defeated Notre Dame 93-87 on Saturday in South Bend, Indiana.

The Hokies made 10 consecutiv­e shots — seven of them by Basile — in building an 85-75 lead with 3:49 to go and finished it off by making eight of their last nine from the free-throw line. Basile, a 15.6 points-per-game scorer, has back-to-back 33-point games.

Justyn Mutts scored 19 points for the Hokies (15-10, 5-9) and M.J. Collins and Sean Pedulla added 12 points each.

Nate Laszewski, who scored 20 points for Notre Dame (10-15, 2-12) in the first half, continued his hot shooting in the second half. He had 30 points and made six of his first eight 3-pointers to keep Notre Dame close.

North Carolina 91, Clemson 71:

Caleb Love hit a career-tying six 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Armando Bacot had 19 points and 11 rebounds and North Carolina beat Clemson in Chapel Hill.

Bacot posted his 15th double-double of the season and 64th of his career as the Tar Heels (16-9, 8-6) snapped a three-game losing streak. RJ Davis added four 3-pointers and 17 points.

PJ Hall scored 18 points for the Tigers (18-7, 10-4).

No. 22 North Carolina State 92, Boston College 62: Jarkel Joiner scored 26 points and D.J. Burns Jr. added 18 with 10 rebounds for the visiting Wolfpack (20-6, 10-5) against the Eagles (12-14, 6-9). Terquavion Smith scored 17 points for the Wolfpack, giving him 1,000 for his career.

Pittsburgh 83, Florida State 75:

Jamarius Burton and Blake Hinson scored 19 points each, Nike Sibande added 10 in a key stretch of the second half, and Pittsburgh (18-7, 11-3 ACC) ensured it would stay in a tie for the ACC lead with a win over Florida State (8-18, 6-9).
